Indicators of port and airport activities in 2006

The volume of cargo reloaded at the ports of Latvia in 2006 has slightly decreased in comparison with the previous year, according to the Central Statistical Bureau. Cargo turnover at ports in January-December 2006 was 59.5 mln tons, a decrease of 0.9% compared to 2005.

53.1 mln tons of cargo were loaded at ports in 2006, down by 5% on the 12 months of 2005. The volume of crude oil loaded at ports has increased. Last year 1.2 mln tons of crude oil were loaded at ports, 2.8 times more than in the twelve months of 2005. However, the volumes of other important cargoes have decreased. 19.7 mln tons of oil products were loaded at ports, down by 2.2% on January-December 2005. The volume of coal loaded has decreased by 4.8% reaching 14.6 mln tons. 4.6 mln tons of timber were loaded at ports, a decrease of 19.2% compared to the previous year. The volume of mineral fertilisers loaded at ports in the twelve months of 2006 also decreased substantially reaching 5.1 mln tons, down by 21.7% on 2005.

The volume of cargo unloadedat ports in 2006 increased substantially and represented 6.4 mln tons, an increase of 54.8% on the twelve months of 2005. The volume of cargo in containers (1.1 mln tons) accounted for the bulk of cargo unloaded. The volume of this cargo unloaded has increased by 13.1% in comparison with January-December 2005. In 2006 the volume of roll on/roll off cargoes unloaded at ports was 1 mln tons. The volume of this kind of cargo has increased by 22.5% in comparison with 2005. 0.9 mln tons of construction materials were unloaded at ports, an increase of 33.4% on 2005. 2 The volume of grain and grain products unloaded at ports in the 12 months of 2006 rose by 43.4% but the volume of sugar unloaded increased by 55.5%.

In 2006 29.1 mln tons of cargo were loaded and unloaded at the port of Ventspils, a decrease of 2.7% in comparison with 2005. The volume of cargo loaded at the port of Ventspils decreased by 9.4% and was 26.3 mln tons. There has been a substantial decrease in the volume of potassium salt loaded in 2006 at the port of Ventspils (3.7 mln tons, down by 27.9% on the 12 months of the previous year). The volume of oil products loaded reached 14.6 mln tons, down by 11.9% on January-December 2005. The volume of coal loaded at the port of Ventspils also fell to 3.9 mln tons, a decrease of 14.4% compared to January-December 2005. Due to the change of the location of the ship agents` activities from the port of Liepāja to the port of Ventspils, the volume of roll on/roll off cargo loaded has increased three times. The volume of cargo unloaded at the port of Ventspils has increased 3.3 times and was 2.8 mln tons. Compared to the twelve months of 2005, the volume of roll on/roll off cargo unloaded has increased 3.1 times and the volume of cargo in containers unloaded has increased 26.2 times. The volume of sugar unloaded in January-December 2006 increased by 50.9% in comparison with the twelve months of the previous year.

Cargo turnover at the port of Riga in 2006 was 25.3 mln tons, up by 3.8% on the 12 months of 2005. 22.5 mln tons of cargo were loaded at the port of Riga, an increase of 2.2% compared to January-December of the previous year. Coal (10.7 mln tons; a decrease of 0.5% in comparison to 2005) accounted for the bulk of cargo loaded at the port of Riga. The volume of timber loaded in the twelve months of 2006 was 3 mln tons, a decrease of 22.3% compared to 2005. 4.4 mln tons of oil products were loaded at the port of Riga, an increase of 38% on 2005. In January-December 2006 2.8 mln tons of cargo were unloaded at the port of Riga, 18.9% up on the twelve months of the previous year. Cargo in containers represented the bulk of cargo unloaded at the port of Riga. In 2006, 1 mln tons of cargo in containers were unloaded at the port of Riga, an increase of 3.4% compared to January-December 2005. The volume of construction materials unloaded at the port of Riga last year was 0.7 mln tons, an increase of 29.1% on 2005 and the volume of sugar unloaded was 0.2 mln tons, 1.6 times more than in January-December 2005.

The volume of cargo loaded and unloaded at the port of Liepāja has decreased. This was partly influenced by the change of location of the ship agent’s activities from the port of Liepāja to the port of Ventspils. Cargo turnover at the port of Liepāja in 2006 was 4 mln tons, a decrease of 11.3% compared with 2005. In January-December 2006 3.4 mln tons of cargo were loaded at the port of Liepāja, a decrease of 10.3% compared to the previous year. Oil products (increase 1.9 times) represented the bulk of cargoes loaded at the port of Liepāja. By contrast, there were the following decreases in the volumes of other cargo loaded: 9.3% for base metals and articles of base metals, 21.9% for timber and 26.2% for grain and grain products. The volume of cargo unloaded in the twelve months of 2006 at the port of Liepāja reached 0.6mln tons, down by 15.9% compared to January-December 2005. The volume of grain and grain products represented the bulk of cargo unloaded. The volume of this cargo unloaded has increased 1.5 times in comparison to 2005.

Cargo turnover at the minor ports in the twelve months of 2006 decreased in comparison withanuary-December of the previous year. The volume of cargo loaded and unloaded at the minor ports was 1.1 mln tons, down by 13.3% compared to 2005. Cargoes loaded accounted for the bulk (80.7%) of cargo turnover at the minor ports; of these, timber cargo constituted 0.6 mln tons.

Passenger turnover at the airport “Rīga” isstillgrowing rapidly. There were 2494.8 thsd passenger arrivals at and departures from the airport in 2006, an increase of 32.9% compared to January-December 2005. The number of passengers using the services of both the Latvian and foreign airlines has increased. In 2006 1122.6 thsd passengers arrived at and departed from the airport “Rīga” on the aircraft of the Latvian airlines, an increase of 29.3% compared to the 12 months of the previous year. The number of passengers who arrived at and departed from the airport “Rīga” by the aircraft of foreign airlines was 1372.3 thsd, an increase of 36% on the previous year.

Due to the ferry traffic with Sweden renewed in the 2nd quarter of 2006, total passenger turnover in the port of Riga has increased.. Last year 246.9 thsd passengers arrived at and departed from the passenger port of Riga, an increase of 26.5% compared to the previous year. Of the total passenger turnover, 165.2 thsd passenger arrived at and departed from the passenger port.
