The volume of cargo reloaded at the ports of Latvia in 2005 was 60 mln tons, an increase of 4.6% compared to 2004, according to the Central Statistical Bureau.

55.9 mln tons of cargo were loaded at ports in the twelve months of 2005, 3.3% up on the corresponding period of 2004. The volume of crude oil loaded has decreased substantially. In the 12 months of 2005, 0.4 mln tons of crude oil were transported from ports, which is 5.2 times less compared to January-December 2004. This amount is still accounted for only by crude oil transported to the ports by rail. The volume of oil products loaded at ports in January-December 2005 was 20.1 mln tons, up by 3.4% on the corresponding period of 2004. The volume of coal loaded at ports has also increased. In the 12 months of 2005, 15.3 mln tons of coal were loaded at ports, an increase of 14.9% compared to the 12 months of 2004. 6.5 mln tons of mineral fertilisers were loaded at ports in January-December 2005, up by 8.2% on the corresponding period of 2004. In addition, 5.7 mln tons of timber were loaded at ports in the 12 months of 2005, a decrease of 10.6% on the corresponding period of the previous year.

The volume of cargo unloaded at ports in the 12 months of 2005 was 4.1 mln tons, 25.8% up on the twelve months of 2004. The volume of cargo in containers (1 mln tons) accounted for the bulk of cargo unloaded. The volume of this cargo unloaded has increased by 12.9% in comparison with January-December 2004. In 2005 the volume of roll on/roll off cargoes unloaded at ports was 0.8 mln tons. The volume of this kind of cargo has increased by 13.1% in comparison with the 12 months of 2004. The volume of construction materials unloaded at ports has increased notably (4.8 times), as has the volume of grain and grain products, up by 47 % compared with the previous year. In the 12 months of 2005, 304 thsd tons of sugar were unloaded at ports, a decrease of 29.2% compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.

29.9 mln tons of cargo were loaded and unloaded at the port of Ventspils in January-September 2005, an increase of 7.4% in comparison with the corresponding period of 2004. 0.2 mln tons of crude oil were loaded at the port of Ventspils, a fall of 8.6 times compared to the 12 months of 2004. 5.1 mln tons of potassium salt were loaded at the port of Ventspils in the twelve months of 2005, an increase of 14.9% on the 12 months of the previous year. The volume of oil products loaded reached 16.6 mln tons, up by 12.8% on January-December 2004. The volume of coal loaded at the port of Ventspils rose to 4.6 mln tons, an increase of 17.7% compared to the 12 months of 2004.

The volume of cargo unloaded at the port of Ventspils increased in the 12 months of 2005 by 19.5%. There was an increase of 1.7 times in the volume of roll on/roll off cargo unloaded in January-December 2005 reaching 264.9 thsd tons compared to the corresponding period of 2004. The volume of oil products unloaded at the port of Ventspils increased substantially in 2005 and reached 0.3 mln tons. The volume of sugar unloaded in the 12 months of 2005 decreased by 35.7% in comparison with the twelvemonths of the previous year.

Cargo turnover at the port of Riga in 2005 was 24.4 mln tons, up by 1.8% on 2004. 22 mln tons of cargo were loaded at the port of Riga, a decrease of 0.5% compared to the twelve months of the previous year. Coal (10.7 mln tons; an increase of 13.8% in comparison to January-December 2004) accounted for the bulk of cargo loaded at the port of Riga. The volume of timber loaded in 2005 was 3.8 mln tons, a decrease of 12.3% compared to the corresponding period of 2004. In the 12 months of 2005 3.2 mln tons of oil products were loaded at the port of Riga, 24.7% down on the corresponding period of 2004. In the 12 months of 2005 2.4 mln tons of cargo were unloaded at the port of Riga, 30% up on the twelve months of the previous year. Cargo in containers represented the bulk of cargo unloaded at the port of Riga. In the 12 months of 2005, 1 mln tons of cargo in containers were unloaded at the port of Riga, an increase of 13.7% compared to January-December 2004. The volume of mobile cargo unloaded at the port of Riga increased by 42%. The volume of construction materials unloaded at the port of Riga in the 12 months of 2005 rose markedly, 4.9 times more than in the corresponding period of the previous year.

The volume of cargo loaded and unloaded at the port of Liepaja in January-December 2005 has increased slightly, up by 0.8% on the corresponding period of 2004 and was 4.5 mln tons. The volume of cargo unloaded has decreased. In January-December 2005 3.8 mln tons of cargo were loaded at the port of Liepaja, a decrease of 0.7% compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. The volume of oil products loaded has decreased 1.5 times. The volume of timber loaded decreased by 6.7% and that of base metals and metal products fell by 5.5% in comparison with the twelve months of the previous year. By contrast, the volume of grain and grain products loaded rose 2.3 times. The volume of cargo unloaded in the twelve months of 2005 at the port of Liepaja reached 0.7mln tons, up by 8.8% compared to the twelve months of 2004. The volume of grain and grain products (0.3 mln tons) represented the bulk of cargo unloaded at the port of Liepaja in January-December 2005. The volume of this cargo unloaded has increased 1.6 times in comparison to the corresponding period of 2004. The volume of mobile cargoes unloaded at the port of Liepaja has dropped notably, by 32.6%.

Cargo turnover at the minor ports in 2005 has increased in comparison with January-December of the previous year. The volume of cargo loaded and unloaded at the minor ports in the twelve months of 2005 was 1.2 mln tons, up by 9.9% compared to the 12 months of 2004. Cargoes loaded accounted for the bulk (84.1%) of cargo turnover at the minor ports; of these, timber cargo constituted 0.7 mln tons.

Passenger turnover at the airport “Riga” is still growing rapidly. There were 1877.5 thsd passenger arrivals at and departures from the airport in the 12 months of 2005, an increase of 1.8 times compared to January-December 2004. The number of passengers using both the services of the Latvian and foreign airlines has increased very rapidly. In the twelve months of 2005 868.2 thsd passengers arrived at and departed from the airport “Riga” on the aircraft of the Latvian airlines, an increase of 41% compared to the twelve months of the previous year. The number of passengers who arrived at and departed from the airport “Riga” in 2005 by the aircraft of foreign airlines was 1009.2 thsd, an increase of 2.3 times on the corresponding period of the previous year. The largest passenger turnover volume at the airport “Riga” in the 12 months of 2005 was secured by the German airports (366.7 thsd passengers). The increase in comparison with the corresponding period of 2004 was 2.2 times). Passenger turnover at the airport “Rīga” from the British airports in January-December 2005 rose 2.5 times in comparison with the corresponding period of 2004 and was 309.9 thsd passengers. Passenger turnover from the Finnish airports was 165.5 thsd passengers, 1.7 times more than in the 12 months of 2004.
