Indicators of port and airport activities in the 1stquarter of 2007

The volume of cargo reloaded at the ports of Latvia in the 1st quarter of 2007 slightly increased in comparison with the corresponding period of the previous year, according to the Central Statistical Bureau. Cargo turnover at ports in January-March 2007 was 14.9 mln tons, an increase of 3.1% compared to the 1st quarter of 2006.

13.3 mln tons of cargo were loaded at ports in the 1st quarter of 2007, down by 2.9% on the 1st quarter of 2006. The volume of mineral fertilisers loaded at ports has increased. In the first three months of 2007 1.5 mln tons of mineral fertilisers were loaded at ports, an increase of 28.7% compared to the 3 months of 2006. Compared to the 1st quarter of the previous year, the volume of crude oil loaded at ports in the 1st quarter of 2007 increased 7.5 times. The volume of crude oil loaded in the 1st quarter of 2007 was 0.3 mln tons. By contrast, the volume of oil products loaded at ports in the 3 months of 2007 decreased and was 5.1 mln tons, down by 7.9% compared to January-March 2006. In addition, in the 1st quarter of 2007 1mln tons of timber were loaded at ports, a decrease of 8.6% compared with the corresponding period of the previous year. The volume of coal loaded at ports in the first 3 months of 2007 was 3.3 mln tons, down by 11.1% on the corresponding period of 2006.

The volume of cargo unloadedat ports in the 1st quarter of 2007 increased substantially. In January-March 2007 1.7 mln tons of cargo were unloaded at ports, an increase of 2.1 times on the three months of 2006. This increase was mainly accounted for by the increases in both the most significant cargoes (cargo in containers and roll on/roll off cargoes). Cargo in containers (0.3 mln tons) accounted for the bulk of cargo unloaded. The volume of this cargo unloaded has increased by 17.3% in comparison with January-March 2006. In the 3 months of 2007 the volume of roll on/roll off cargo unloaded at ports was 0.2 mln tons. The volume of this kind of cargo has increased by 27.7% in comparison with the 1st quarter of 2006. 0.2 mln tons of sugar were unloaded at ports in the first three months of 2007, an increase of 2.1 times on the corresponding period of 2006. The volume of grain and grain products unloaded at ports in the 1st quarter of 2007 rose by 23.4% in comparison with the 1st quarter of the previous year.

7.8 mln tons of cargo were loaded and unloaded at the port of Ventspils in January-March 2007, an increase of 7.2% in comparison with the corresponding period of 2006. The volume of cargo loaded in the 1st quarter of 2007 in the port of Ventspils increased by 1.1% and was 7.1 mln tons. There was an increase in the volume of potassium salt loaded at the port of Ventspils in the 1st quarter of 2007 (1.1 mln tons, up by 32.4% on the 1st quarter of the previous year). The volume of coal loaded at the port of Ventspils has increased reaching 1 mln tons, an increase of 0.2% on the 1st quarter of 2006. The volume of oil products loaded reached 3.9 mln tons, down by 8.4% on January-March 2006. The volume of roll on/roll off cargo loaded in the 1st quarter of 2007 decreased by 8.9% and was 0.2 mln tons. The volume of cargo unloaded at the port of Ventspils in the first 3 months of 2007 increased 2.4 times. Compared to the 1st quarter of 2006, the volume of roll on/roll off cargo unloaded has increased by 16.1%. The volume of cargo in containers unloaded has also increased (1.7 times). The volume of sugar unloaded in the first 3 months rose 1.8 times in comparison with the 3 months of the previous year.

Cargo turnover at the port of Riga in the first 3 months of 2007 was 5.8 mln tons, down by 2.8% on the 3 months of 2006. 5.2 mln tons of cargo were loaded at the port of Riga, a decrease of 8.2% compared to January-March of the previous year. Coal (2.3 mln tons; a decrease of 15.3% in comparison to January-March 2006) accounted for the bulk of cargo loaded at the port of Riga. The volume of timber loaded in the 1st quarter of 2007 was 0.7 mln tons, a decrease of 4.7% compared to corresponding period of 2006. In the three months of 2007 1.1 mln tons of oil products were loaded at the port of Riga, down by 2.6% on the corresponding period of 2006. The volume of cargo unloaded at the port of Riga increased substantially in the 1st quarter of 2007. 0.7 mln tons of cargo were unloaded at the port of Riga, an increase of 1.8 times compared to the three months of the previous year. Cargo in containers represented the bulk of cargo unloaded at the port of Riga. In the 1st quarter of 2007, 0.3 mln tons of cargo in containers were unloaded at the port of Riga, an increase of 13.9% compared to January-March 2006.

The volume of cargo loaded and unloaded at the port of Liepāja has decreased. Cargo turnover at the port of Liepāja in the 1st quarter of 2007 was 1 mln tons, and this is a decrease of 1.5% compared to the corresponding period of 2006. In January-March 2007 0.8 mln tons of cargo were loaded at the port of Liepāja, a decrease of 10.7% compared to the corresponding quarter of the previous year. The volume of base metals and articles of base metals loaded at the port of Liepāja has increased by 3.9% compared to the 1st quarter of 2006. The volume of grain and grain products also increased in comparison with the 1st quarter of 2006 (by 45.9%). By contrast, in comparison with the first three months of the previous year there were the following decreases in the volumes of other relevant cargo loaded: 29% for oil products and 38.7% for timber. The volume of cargo unloaded in the 1st quarter of 2007 at the port of Liepāja increased radically and reached 0.2 mln tons, up by 77.2% compared to the 1st quarter of 2006. The volume of grain and grain products represented the bulk of cargo unloaded. The volume of this cargo unloaded has increased by 23.1% in comparison with the corresponding period of 2006. The volume of construction materials unloaded also accounted for the increase in the volume of cargo unloaded amounting to 51.2 thsd tons in the 1st quarter of 2007.

Cargo turnover at the minor ports in the first three months of 2007 increased in comparison with January-March last year. The volume of cargo loaded and unloaded at the minor ports in the three months of 2007 was 299.8 thsd tons, up by 57.3% compared to the 1st quarter of 2006. Cargoes loaded accounted for the bulk (84.7%) of cargo turnover at the minor ports; of these, timber cargo constituted 160.4 thsd tons.

Passenger turnover at the airport “Rīga” continuesto grow rapidly. There were 591.5 thsd passenger arrivals at and departures from the airport in the 1st quarter of 2007, an increase of 20.5% compared to January-March 2006. The number of passengers using the services of both the Latvian and foreign airlines has increased. In the first 3 months of 2007 264.8 thsd passengers arrived at and departed from the airport “Rīga” on the aircraft of the Latvian airlines, an increase of 32.1% compared to the three months of the previous year. The number of passengers who arrived at and departed from the airport “Rīga” by the aircraft of foreign airlines was 326.7 thsd, an increase of 12.5% on the corresponding period of the previous year.

Passenger turnover at the passenger port of Riga in the 3 months of 2007 increased notably. In the 1st quarter of 2007 35.9 thsd passengers arrived at and departed from the port, an increase of 9.5 times compared to the 1st quarter of 2006.
