28.04.2006

The volume of cargo reloaded at the ports of Latvia has slightly decreased in comparison with the corresponding period of the previous year, according to the Central Statistical Bureau. Cargo turnover at ports in January-March 2006 was 14.5 mln tons, a decrease of 0.8% on the 1st quarter of 2005.

In the first 3 months of 2006 3.7 mln tons of coal were loaded, an increase of 18.1% on the 3 months of 2005. Due to the decreasing volumes of crude oil and oil products transported by rail, the volumes of crude oil and oil products loaded at ports have also decreased. 44.2 thsd tons of crude oil were loaded in the 1st quarter of 2006, down by a factor of 3.5 on the 1st quarter of 2005. 5.5 mln tons of oil products were loaded at the ports in the 3 months of 2006, a decrease of 5.2% compared to January-March 2005. The volume of cargo unloaded at ports in the 1st quarter of 2006 was 0.8 mln tons, an increase of 36.5% on the 3 months of 2005. This was mainly due to an increase in the volume of the most relevant cargoes unloaded such as cargo in containers and mobile cargo (roll on/roll off). The volume of cargo in containers (0.2 mln tons) accounted for the bulk of cargo unloaded. The volume of this cargo unloaded has increased by 20.5% in comparison with January-March 2005. In the 3 months of 2006 0.2 mln tons of mobile cargoes were unloaded at ports. The volume of this type of cargo has increased by 15.5% in comparison with the 1st quarter of 2005. 74.4 thsd tons of sugar were unloaded at ports in the first 3 months of 2006, an increase of 1.6 times on the corresponding period of the previous year. The volume of cargo unloaded at the port of Ventspils in the 1st quarter of 2006 decreased by 6.3% and was 7 mln tons. The volume of potassium salt loaded at the port of Ventspils has decreased substantially and was 0.8 mln tons in the 1st quarter of 2006, down by 35% on the 1st quarter of the previous year. The volume of oil products loaded reached 4.2 mln tons, down by 8.7% on January-March 2005.There has been an increase of 1 mln tons in the volume of coal loaded and unloaded at the port of Ventspils, up by 6.7% compared to the 1st quarter of 2005. Since all loading and unloading operations of mobile cargoes have passed over from the port of Liepāja to the port of Ventspils, there has been a substantial increase (8.2 times) in the volume of mobile cargoes loaded. The volume of mobile cargoes unloaded at the port of Ventspils in the first 3 months of 2006 increased 3.1 times. The volume of mobile cargoes unloaded increased 7.8 times in comparison with the 1st quarter of 2005. The volume of cargo in containers unloaded has likewise increased (by a factor of 4.2). There was an increase of 60.7% in the volume of sugar unloaded in the first 3 months of 2006 in comparison with the 3 months of the previous years.

Cargo turnover at the port of Riga in the first 3 months of 2006 was 6 mln tons, up by 5.2% on the 3 months of 2005. 5.6 mln tons were loaded at the port of Riga, an increase of 5.4% compared to January-March of the previous year.
