In January-June 2006, 8 mln tons of coal were loaded at ports, an increase of 9.8% compared to the six months of 2005. In view of the substantial decrease in the volume of crude oil transported by rail in the 1st half of 2006, the volume of crude oil and oil products loaded at ports has likewise decreased in the 1st half of 2006. Only 0.3 mln tons of crude oil were loaded in the 1st half of 2006, down by 8.5% on the 1st half of 2005. The volume of oil products loaded at ports in the 6 months of 2006 was 10.5 mln tons, a decrease of 2.7% compared to January-June 2005. The volume of oil products loaded reached 7.9 mln tons, down by 8.7% on January-June 2005. The volume of coal loaded at the port of Ventspils decreased slightly to 2.2 mln tons; a decrease of 1.2% compared to the 1st half of 2005. Due to the change of the location of the ship agents` activities from the port of Liepāja to the port of Ventspils, the volume of roll on/roll off cargo loaded has increased notably, 7.8 times. The volume of cargo unloaded at the port of Ventspils increased 4.3 times in January-June 2006 and was 1.1 mln tons. Compared to the 1st half of 2005, the volume of roll on/roll off cargo unloaded has increased 8 times. Similarly the volume of cargo in containers unloaded has increased 12.6 times. The volume of cargo loaded and unloaded at the port of Liepāja has decreased. This was partly influenced by the change of location of the ship agent’s activities from the port of Liepāja to the port of Ventspils. Cargo turnover at the port of Liepāja in the 1st half of 2006 was 2.1 mln tons, a decrease of 10.4% compared with the corresponding period of 2005. There were 1132.2 thsd passenger arrivals at and departures from the airport in the 1st half of 2006, an increase of 39.7% compared to January-June 2005. The number of passengers using the services of both the Latvian and foreign airlines has increased. In the six months of 2006 487.5 thsd passengers arrived at and departed from the airport “Rīga” on the aircraft of the Latvian airlines, an increase of 31.4% compared to the 1st half of the previous year. The number of passengers who arrived at and departed from the airport “Rīga” in the 1st half of 2006 by the aircraft of foreign airlines was 644.7 thsd, an increase of 46.6% on the corresponding period of the previous year. The largest passenger turnover volume at the airport “Rīga” in the 1st half of 2006 was ensured by the British airports (217.2 thsd passengers compared to the corresponding period of 2005). Passenger turnover at the airport “Rīga” from the German airports in the 1st half of 2006 decreased slightly, by 0.8% and rpresented 167.5 thsd passengers. Due to the many guest workers from Latvia employed in Ireland passenger turnover with the Irish airports has increased markedly. In the 1st half of 2006 passenger turnover with these airports increased 4.4 times and totalled 92.5 thsd passengers.

Despite the fact that passenger turnover at the passenger port of Riga in the 1st quarter of 2006 decreased rapidly, total passenger turnover has increased thanks to the renewal of ferry traffic with Sweden in the 2nd quarter of 2006. In the 1st half of 2006 82.2 thsd passengers arrived at and departed from the passenger port of Riga, an increase of 1% compared to the 1st half of 2005.
