Hotels and recreational establishments in the 3rd quarter of 2009

In comparison with the 3rd quarter of 2008, number of visitors in hotels and other collective accommodation establishments¹ in the 3rd quarter of 2009 decreased by 31% and comprised 411.1 thsd people, according to Central Statistical Bureau. Of all visitors 30% were Latvian residents and 70% - foreign visitors. The number of foreign visitors has reduced by 24%. The number of visitors from Great Britain and Lithuania has decreased the most – by 41.5% and 39.7%, respectively.

The highest share of the foreign tourists stayed in Riga – 71% and Jurmala – 11%. In its turn, the highest share of the Latvian residents stayed in Riga – 25%, Ventspils – 11%, Liepaja – 10% and Jurmala – 7%.

At the end of the 3rd quarter 14.7 thsd rooms were available in accommodation establishments, which is more by 8% than in the 3rd quarter of 2008, and 32.8 thsd beds were available which is more by 8% than in the same period of previous year.

Compared to the same period of 2008, in the 3rd quarter of 2009 hotel room and bed occupancy rate² in Latvia and Riga has decreased.

¹ Every month CSB carries out survey on hotels and other collective accommodation establishments which compiles information on Latvian collective accommodation establishments, excluding State specialized sanatoriums and convalescent homes, which provide health care services for State. The survey includes hotels with at least 10 rooms and other collective accommodation establishments with at least 5 rooms.

² Bed and room occupancy rates are monthly indicators.
