Hotels and recreational establishments in 2nd quarter of 2008

In comparison with the 2nd quarter of 2007, number of visitors in hotels and other collective accommodation establishments¹ in the 2nd quarter of 2008 increased by 6% and has reached 420.7 thsd people, according to Central Statistical Bureau. Of which 39% were residents of Latvia and 61% – foreign tourists. The highest share of the Latvian residents stayed in Riga – 29%, Riga district – 11% and Liepaja – 10%. Of all foreign tourists 76% stayed at hotels and other accommodation establishments in Riga, but 10% of all foreign tourists stayed at accommodation establishments in Jurmala.

In the 2nd quarter of 2008 were surveyed 467 active hotels and other collective accommodation establishments, of which 198 hotels. In Riga were surveyed 113 collective accommodation establishments, of which 81 hotel, in Jurmala – 43 collective accommodation establishments, of which 18 hotels.

At the end of 2nd quarter of 2007 13.1 thsd rooms and 29.1 thsd beds were available in accommodation establishments.

Compared to the same period of 2007, in the 2nd quarter of 2008, excluding May, hotel room and bed occupancy rate in Latvia and Riga has decreased ².

¹ The Central statistical Bureau every month carries out survey on hotels and other collective accommodation establishments, in which is compiled information on Latvian collective accommodation establishments, excluding State specialized sanatoriums and convalescent homes, which provide health care services for State. The survey includes hotels where are at least 10 rooms and other collective accommodation establishments where are at least 5 rooms.

² Bed and room occupancy rates are monthly indicators.
