Foreign trade of Latvia in May 2006

The data of Central Statistical Bureau show that the value of export of Latvia has increased in May 2006 by 5.0% or 12.9 million lats in comparison with the preceding month, and by 10.1% or 25.0 million lats in comparison with May 2005, reaching 271.4 million lats.

Accordingly, the import value in May 2006 was by 10.3% or 47.3 million lats bigger than a month before, and by 27.9% or 110.5 million lats bigger than in May 2005, reaching 506.0 million lats.

The total foreign trade turnover in January – May 2006 was by 20.7% or 602.8 million lats bigger than in the corresponding period of previous year, and its value reached 3509.2 million lats.

Compared to January-May 2005, the considerable increases in exports in January-May 2006 were 49.5% for products of chemical and allied industries, 39.6% for agricultural and food products and 38.8% for plastics and plastic products. The decreases in exports, in turn, were 36.4% for mineral products, 6.3% for pulp and wood, paper and paperboard; and 3.1% for wood and articles of wood.
Compared to January-May 2005, the steepest increases in imports in January-May 2006 were 52.1% for miscellaneous manufactured articles (including furniture), 48.5% for transport vehicles and 30.6% for products of chemical and allied industries. There was, in turn, a decrease of 3.1% in the imports of wood and of articles of wood.
