Foreign trade of Latvia in January-September 2011

In January - September 2011, total volume of goods in foreign trade of Latvia at current prices reached 9 899.9 mln lats – an increase of 2 385.5 mln lats or 31.7% as compared to January – September 2010, according to provisional data of the Central Statistical Bureau. Of which export volume increased by 1 052.6 mln lats or 31.4%, whereas the volume of import – by 1 332.9 mln lats or 32.0%.

In January - September 2011, a slight decline in foreign trade balance could be observed, as the export share in the total foreign trade volume decreased to 44.5% (in January – September 2010 – 44.6%).

Compared to January – September 2010, the volume of export at constant prices in January – September 2011 due to the influence of price changes grew by 15.5%, whereas the volume of import – by 23.8%.

2 Broad Economic Categories classification.

According to the BEC classification, exported and imported goods can be grouped in categories by possible kind of utilisation. Capital goods consist of fixed assets, goods of intermediate consumption and other materials provided for further processing. Goods produced for the needs of the population are considered as consumer goods. Other goods not included in the above-mentioned categories (e.g., army equipment and other specific goods) are included in the category “other goods”.
