Foreign trade of Latvia in January – September 2009

The provisional data of the Central Statistical Bureau show that, in January - September 2009 total volume of goods in foreign trade of Latvia at current prices reached 5918.7 mln lats – a decrease of 3271.6 mln lats or 35.6%, if compared to January – September 2008. Of which exports volume decreased by 870.1 mln lats or 25.6%, but imports value – by 2401.5 mln lats or 41.4%.

Due to the influence of price changes, compared to January – September 2008, in January – September 2009 the volume of exports at constant prices reduced by 16.4%. At the same time the volume of imports at constant prices decreased by 38.0 %.

3 Broad Economic Categories classification.

According to BEC classification, exported and imported goods can be grouped in categories by possible kind of their utilisation. Capital goods consist of fixed assets, goods of intermediate consumption and other materials envisaged for the further processing. Goods envisaged for the needs of population are considered to be consumer goods. Other goods not included in the mentioned categories (e.g., army equipment etc. specific goods) are included in the category “other goods”.
