Foreign trade of Latvia in January 2006

The value of exports in January 2006 was 217.7 mln lats, a decrease of 44.0 mln lats or 16.8% compared to the previous month and an increase of 28.7 mln lats or 15.2%, compared to January 2005.

The value of imports in January 2006 was 375.2 mln lats, a decrease of 106.9 mln lats or 22.2% compared to the previous month but compared to January 2005 it has increased by 80.7 mln lats or 27.4%.

Latvia’s foreign trade, in millions of lats1

Compared to January 2005, the sharpest increases in exports in January 2006 were 89.1% for live animals and animal products, 58.8% for food products, non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages and tobacco and 28.3% for the products of chemical and allied industries. There were decreases in the exports of mineral products (by 23.7%) and in the exports of base metals and articles of base metals (by 6.5%).

Compared to January of 2005, the steepest increases in imports in January 2006 were 47.6% for machinery and mechanical appliances; electrical equipment, 37.1% for transport vehicles and 24.4% for mineral products. In turn, there was a decrease of 11.8% in the imports of wood and of articles of wood.
