Foreign trade of Latvia in food products and fuel in 2007

The value of agricultural and food product exports in 2007 reached 582.5 mln lats (at current prices) compared to 435.0 mln lats in the previous year, according to the Central Statistical Bureau. Of which the value of exports of food products, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages and tobacco products was 313.6 mln lats (245.2 mln lats in 2006).

The value of agricultural and food product imports in 2007 comprised 864.6 mln lats (at current prices) compared to 706.6 mln lats in the previous year. Of which the value of imports of food products, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages and tobacco products was 476.6 mln lats (379.2 mln lats in 2006).

Compared to 2006, both exports of agricultural and food product and exports of food products, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages and tobacco products (at current prices) increased slightly faster than their imports. In 2007 the share in the exports of Latvian food products was significant in our neighbouring countries – Lithuania and Estonia— 23.8% and 21.8%, respectively, but in imports – 25.5% and 8.9%. In the trade with Estonia the exports of these commodities increased by 45.5%, but the imports- by 32.3%, in its turn, in the trade with Lithuania the exports increased by47.8% and imports- by 41.5%.

Compared to 2006, in 2007 the exports value of agricultural and food products (at current prices) increased by 33.9% (at current prices) (rate in total exports 14.5%), of which the exports of food products, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages and tobacco products by 27.9%.

Different milk products (at current prices) were mainly exported to the EU countries– 85.1% values at current prices:

- milk, cream, other cultured products–87.3% (to Lithuania – 57.7%, Germany – 20.0%, Netherlands – 3.4%). Significant, that 5.5 % of these products were exported to Libya.

- Cheese and curd–78.7% (to Germany – 36.0%, Italy – 9.8%, Finland – 6.6%). 14.1% of cheese and curd were exported to Russia,

- butter – 95.5% (to Germany – 68.3%, Netherlands – 6.1%, Estonia – 4.8%).

73.4% of fresh and frozen fish were sent to the EU countries.The main partners were Estonia (20.8%), Lithuania (20.8%), and France (11.0%). Moreover, 16.6% of fresh and frozen fish were exported to the Belarus.

45.0% of prepared or preserved fish were exported to the EU (to Estonia –20.9%). The importance of CIS in the realisation of this product has decreased- the share 36.9% compared to 41.0% in the previous year, including 19.3% which were exported to Russia.

The main partner of vodka export among the EU countries was Cyprus – 25.9% of the total vodka export. 32.1% were exported to the United States of America and 15.6%- to Canada.

71.4% of beer was exported to the EU countries (to Lithuania– 56.3%, Estonia – 9.8%) Some part of the beer was exported also to the Russia – 25.6% of total beer export.

The cigarettes were mainly exported to the EU countries 96.6% (to Estonia 47.9%, Lithuania – 34.1%, Denmark – 8.7%).

Compared to 2006, in 2007 the imports value of agricultural and food products (at current prices) increased by 22.4% (at current prices) (rate in total imports 11.2%), of which the imports of food products, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages and tobacco products by 25.7%.

Most of the agricultural and food product value (at current prices) – 87,9%, were imported from the EU countries.

The meat of swine was mainly imported from Poland – 36.8%, Germany – 20.0%, Estonia – 18.1%, Denmark – 7.8%.

The poultry was imported from Lithuania – 29.6%, Netherlands – 25.2%, United Kingdom – 11.3%, Denmark – 10.1%.

Fresh and frozen fish were imported from Sweden – 41.0%, Lithuania – 16.9%, Denmark – 4.1%. Moreover, 13.5% of fresh and frozen fish were exported from Norway.

Milk, cream, other milk products were mainly imported from Lithuania – 32.8%, Estonia – 27.6%, Poland – 21.8%, Germany – 11.9%.

The sugar was mainly imported from Lithuania – 60.3%, Denmark – 14.9%, Poland – 12.4%, Estonia – 7.2%.

Chocolate and other food preparations containing cocoa were imported from Lithuania – 27.0%, Poland – 15.9%, Estonia – 11.7%, Germany – 9.2%.

Non-alcoholic beverages containing added sugar matter were imported from Estonia – 34.8%, also from Lithuania – 13.5%, Austria – 11.9% and Poland – 9.6%.

Wine of fresh grapes was mainly imported from France – 36.2%, Germany – 17.7%, Spain – 13.4%, Italy – 11.1%.

Beer was mainly imported from Estonia – 36.5%, Lithuania – 21.7% less from Czech Republic – 7.4%. Some part of the beer was imported also from Russia – 18.1% of total beer import.

Cigarettes were mainly imported from Lithuania – 70.5%, Finland – 5.3%, Germany – 4.9% and Poland – 4.1%. 4.4% of cigarettes were imported from Turkey.

The most of the diesel oil was imported from the Belarus41.0% and Lithuania- 35.9%. Import from Russia comprised 15.1%, from Norway – 7.5%, from Estonia - 0.3%, from Uzbekistan – 0.1% and from Denmark – 0.1%.

The motor spirits were mostly imported from Lithuania– 86.9%. The rest was imported from Norway10.2%, Belarus – 1.7%, Russia – 0.9%, Estonia – 0.2% and Great Britain – 0.1%.

Most of the residual fuel was imported from Russia – 35.8% and Belarus – 32.3%, from Estonia were imported 23.8%, from Kazakhstan- 5.5%, from Denmark- 2.4%, and from Germany and Finland- 0.1%.
