Foreign trade of Latvia in December 2006

The value of exports in December 2006 decreased by 1.9% or 5.6 mln lats compared to the previous month but compared to December 2005 it increased by 4% or 10.8 mln lats reaching 282.0 mln lats.

The value of imports in December 2006 was by 2.3% or 13.9 mln lats higher than a month ago but compared to December 2005 it was by 21.3% or 106.1 mln lats higher and reached 605.0 mln lats.

The total foreign trade turnover in January-December 2006 was by 22.9% or 1744.4 mln lats higher than in the corresponding period of the previous year and its value reached 9529.6 mln lats.

Compared to January-December 2005, the highest increases in exports in January-December 2006 were 36.7% for the products of the chemical and allied industries, 33.4% for plastics and plastic products and 28.3% for base metals and articles of base metals. The decreases in exports, in turn, were 31.0% for mineral products, 14.5% for pulp of wood; paper and paperboard and 12.8% for optical instruments and apparatus, clocks and watches; musical instruments.

Compared to January-December 2005, the steepest increases in imports in January-December 2006 were 61.3% for transport vehicles, 44.8% for miscellaneous manufactured articles (including furniture), 34.7% for the articles of stone, plaster, cement, glassware and ceramic products and 33.5 % for the base metals and articles of base metals.
