Foreign trade of Latvia in August 2006

The value of exports in August 2006 increased by 9.9% or 25.6 mln lats compared to the previous month but compared to August 2005 it increased by 20.0% or 47.4 mln lats, reaching 284.3 mln lats.

The value of imports in August 2006 was by 9.7% or 49.1 mln lats higher than a month ago but compared to August 2005 it was by 32.9% or 136.9 mln lats higher and reached 552.9 mln lats.

The total foreign trade turnover in January-August 2006 was by 23.8% or 1145.7 mln lats higher than in the corresponding period of the previous year and its value reached 5963.9 mln lats.

Compared to January-August 2005, the highest increases in exports in January-August 2006 were 48.7% for the products of the chemical and allied industries, 38.4% for plastics and plastic products and 35.0% for agricultural and food products. The decreases in exports, in turn, were 31.7% for mineral products, 11.7% for pulp of wood; paper and paperboard and 2.2% for wood and articles of wood.

Compared to January-August 2005, the steepest increases in imports in January-August 2006 were 60.9% for transport vehicles, 56.2% for miscellaneous manufactured articles (including furniture), 36.8% for the articles of stone, plaster, cement, glassware and ceramic products and

35.9% for optical instruments and apparatus, clocks and watches, musical instruments.
