Foreign trade of Latvia in April 2007

Compared to the March 2007, the value of exports in April 2007 decreased by 4.3% or 14.7 mln lats but in comparison with April 2006, it increased by 22.8% or 60.2 mln lats, reaching 324.7 mln lats, according to Central Statistical Bureau data.

The value of imports in April 2007 was, in turn, 3.3% or 21.2 mln lats lower than a month ago, but 31.4 % or 149.0 mln lats higher compared to April 2006, reaching 623.3 mln lats.

The total foreign trade turnover in April 2007 was 28.3% or 209.2 mln lats higher than in the corresponding period of the previous year and its value was as high as 948.0 mln lats.

In April 2007, in comparison with April 2006, in the exports of Latvia the value of main activities – wood and articles of wood, increased by 20.1% (to Lithuania - by 69.1%, Estonia - by 49.3%, Germany - by 25.8%). Increased also exports of such important activities as base metals and articles of base metals – by 30.7% (to Lithuania - by 80.0%, Germany - by 62.9%), but decreased the exports of mineral products – by 25.9% (to Estonia – by 41.3% and to Lithuania - by 38.9%).

Compared to March 2007, thevalue of exports increased for agriculture and food products - by 25.3% (to Lithuania – by 58.7%, Estonia – by 58.4%, Sweden – by 53.7%), for wood and articles of wood – only by 1.2% (to Poland – by 90.0%, Denmark – by 9.4%, Lithuania – by 7.9%).

But the exports decreased for products of the chemical and allied industries by 23.4 % (to Great Britain – by 80.1%, Denmark – by 63.1%, Estonia – by 60.0%), miscellaneous manufactured articles (including furniture) – by 21.3% (to Great Britain – par 42.3%, Denmark – by 34.5%) and textiles and textile articles – by 17.9 % (to Germany – by 40.4%, Denmark – by 39.2%).

Compared to April 2006, in April 2007 the value of imports increased in all important commodity groups. Imports of transport vehicles increased by 46.9% (from Estonia – by 89.0%, from Lithuania - by 58.8%, from Poland – by 33.9%), of base metals and articles of base metals - by 41.1% (from Estonia – by 69.8%, from Lithuania - by 58.8%, from Poland – by 50.5%), of plastics and articles thereof; rubber and articles thereof - by 40.2% (from Finland – by 72.5%, from Sweden – by 60.3%, from Estonia – by 60.0%).

In comparison with March 2007 the imports of base metals and articles of base metals increased – by 3.9% (from Lithuania - by 61.9%, from Great Britain - by 49.7%, from Italy - by 25.4%) and of plastics and articles thereof; rubber and articles thereof - by 0.5% (from Italy - by 19.6%, from Poland - by 2.5%), but decreased imports of textiles and textile articles - by 14.1% (especially from Great Britain – by 28.9%), of pulp of wood; paper, cardboard – by 9.3 % (especially from Russia – by 29.7%) and of products of the chemical and allied industries – by 5.1% (from Germany – by 35.7%, from Denmark – par 22.1%).
