Foreign trade of Latvia in 2009

The provisional data of the Central Statistical Bureau show that, in 2009 total volume of goods in foreign trade of Latvia at current prices reached 8,205.3 mln lats – a decrease of 3,751.3 mln lats or 31.4%, if compared to 2008. Of which exports volume reduced by 857.3 mln lats or 19.4%, but imports volume – by 2,894.0 mln lats or 38.4%.

In 2009 improvement of foreign trade balance was observed, as the exports share in total foreign trade volume increased up to 43.5% (in 2008 – 37.0%).

In the result of changes of prices of goods exports volume (at constant prices) in 2009 compared to 2008 dropped by 10.5%, but imports volume at the same time reduced by 34.2%.

3 Broad Economic Categories classification.
4 Those commodities are included in several categories of BEC.

According to BEC classification, exported and imported goods can be grouped in categories by possible kind of their utilisation. Capital goods consist of fixed assets, goods of intermediate consumption and other materials envisaged for the further processing. Goods envisaged for the needs of population are considered to be consumer goods. Other goods not included in the mentioned categories (e.g., army equipment etc. specific goods) are included in the category “other goods”.
