Employment is still growing

In comparison with the 1st quarter 2012, the number of active population aged 15-74 in the 1st quarter 2013 has increased by 0.6%. Labour Force Survey results compiled by the Central statistical Bureau of Latvia show that active population in this age group comprises 1 030.2 thousand or 65.4%, of which 70.1% are men and 61.4% - women.

During the first three moths of 2013, number of employed persons as well as their share in total population has grown, as compared to the 1st quarter of previous year.In the 1st quarter of 2013, in the country there were 898.3 thousand employed persons – 57.1% of the total population aged 15-74.Comparatively, in the 1st quarter of 2012, the number constituted 857.6 thousand or 54.5%.Women in the total number of employed persons constituted slightly higher share than men - 51.1% and 48.9%, respectively.

Only 4.2% of them did not work due to various reasons, e.g., vocation, illness, childcare leave, education or training.The number employed persons includes 7.1 thousand persons, which still having the status of unemployed during the reference week were employed.

Within the framework of the Labour Force Survey also information on wages and salaries was acquired. Share of employees receiving minimum monthly wage or less has diminished, whereas slight rise (as compared to the 1st quarter of 2012) was recorded in the wage groups over LVL 300.

In the 1st quarter of 2013, the number of unemployed persons aged 15-74 comprised 131.9 thousand - 34.8 thousand persons less, as compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. The share of unemployed persons in the total active population comprised 12.8%, and during the year the number has diminished by 3.5 percentage points (in 1st quarter of 2012 – 16.3%)

In comparison with the corresponding period of the previous year, the number of inactive population aged 15-74 in the 1st quarter of this year has dropped by 1.1% and it comprised 543.9 thousand persons.

Particular attention in this group should be given to the persons who are potential unemployed, but have been discouraged or do not know where and how to find a job. Survey results show that, during the reference quarter, discouraged persons accounted for 33.7 thousand or 6.2% of the inactive population.In comparison with the 1st quarter of 2012, their number has decreased by 1.7 thousand.

Within the framework of the survey 4.1 thousand households were surveyed and 7.1 thousand persons aged 15-74 years were interviewed.
