In the first quarter of 2014 there were 881.7 thousand employed persons in Latvia or 58.6% of the total population aged 15-74. The Labour Force Survey results1 compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia show that a year ago, 57.3% of the persons belonging to this age group were employed, and in the 4th quarter of 2013 - 58.6%. Employment rate has grown with the drop of the number of pupils and students as they have started to work. Also the share of persons who are potential unemployed, but have been discouraged has dropped, and they have entered the labour market. The survey results indicate that, during the reference quarter, discouraged persons accounted for 27.1 thousand or 5.4% of the inactive population. A year ago this share was 6.2%.
Only 4.3% of the employed did not work due to various reasons like vacation, illness, childcare leave, studies. The number of employed persons includes 4.2 thousand people, who still having the status of the unemployed were employed.
The share of women in the total number of the employed was slightly higher than men - 51.3% and 48.7%, respectively.
In the first quarter of 2014 there were 69.3 thsd. employed young people (aged 15 - 24) in Latvia, which is 31.8% of the total number of people of this age group. A year ago this indicator was 29.7%, and in the 4th quarter of 2013 - 31.4%.

Within the framework of the Labour Force Survey, also information on wages and salaries was acquired. Over the year the share of employees receiving wage of up to EUR 285 has decreased, while compared to the first quarter of 2013, a slight increase was observed in the wage group exceeding EUR 285.
