14.08.2013

Provisional data compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia show that, during the first seven months of this year, 11 794 children were born. This number currently does not include children born abroad*, besides data may be specified bearing in mind that within a year CSB is counting up children basing on the registration month instead of the birth month, moreover in line with legislation child may be registered within a month after the birth. As compared to the first seven months of 2012, when 11 731 children were born, the number is only 63 newborn higher.

One of the factors causing the slight increase in the birth number is higher number of females in the age group 25-29. Statistics of 2012 show that average age of mother at childbearing comprised 29.3 years, while at first childbearing - 26.6 years. This age was reached by the females born during the time period from 1983 to 1987 – time when in Latvia the highest number of births was recorded.

At the beginning of 2013, 15.5% of females at childbearing age (15-49) were at age 25-29, as compared to 13.3% at the beginning of 2008, when the highest birth number during the last 10 years was registered. Therefore, birth rate improvement will be recorded only if there is higher number of births. A positive trend to be noted is the fact that also the share of second and third children in the total number of babies is growing.

According to the current female age structure, the number of women at childbearing age in future will reduce significantly, since, starting from 1991, birth number in the country was decreasing. Also migration trends of the recent years should be taken into consideration; as in 2012, 12.6 thousand females emigrated from the country, moreover 66.5% of them were aged 15-49.

* Starting from 2000, the number of births includes also children born outside Latvia to mother (permanent resident of Latvia) when temporary (for less than one year) living abroad. In compliance with the methodology of the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat) these children should be included in the number of children born in Latvia. Before including child in the number of births, information on mother’s place of residence is evaluated as well as information from the National Health Service on reception of health care services paid by the State is compared.
