Demographic processes in Latvia in the 1st half of 2011

04.08.2011

Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia has compiled demographic statistics key indicators on 1st half of 2011. The calculations of the CSB, carried out basing on Population Register data as well as information obtained from civil status registers supervised by the registry authorities of local governments, show that the number of Latvia population continues to diminish, and during the last years the reduction has became more explicit.

On July 1, 2011 Latvia population comprised 2 million 216 thousand persons – 13.8 thousand persons or 0.57% less than at the beginning of the year. The number of population due to natural movement (the number of deaths exceeding births) decreased by 5.7 thousand, and due to the fact that emigration is prevailing on immigration - by 8 thousand persons.

In 2007-2008 the population reduction rate was lower, but in 2009 this indicator grew (-0.57%) and in 2010 the number of population was the lowest since 1998 (-0.83%). During the time period from 1995 till 2010 the number of population reduced mainly because the number of deaths exceeded the number of births. In 2011 for the first time the main reason why the number of population is decreasing is the negative net migration, if compared to negative natural increase of the population.
