The CSB will survey the population on computer and Internet usage

Tomorrow, on 18 January, the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) will start the annual survey on the habits of computer and Internet usage of residents in 2017. The survey will provide information on the e-skills of the population, it will indicate for what purposes people use Internet on a daily basis and what type of devices and technologies are used the most.

Only those residents who have received an invitation letter from the CSB are invited to take part in the survey. It will be possible to fill in the questionnaire online on the CSB website until 7 February. Respondents will have the opportunity to receive consultations from 18 January to 7 February by calling the informative number +371 67366955 on working days from 8:30 to 17:00 or by writing an e-mail letter to iktapsekojums [at] csb [dot] gov [dot] lv.

If a respondent will not have filled in the questionnaire online, a CSB interviewer will contact him or her by phone or will arrive at the declared address of the respondent during the period from 20 February to 12 June. When arriving in person, the interviewer will present an identification card with a photo.

It is planned to survey approximately 9 thousand residents aged 16 to 74. The acquired information will be used only in summarised form for statistical purposes, and the CSB guarantees the confidentiality of personal data. The Statistics Law prohibits CSB from handing over the individual information of respondents to other institutions or organisations.

The CSB invites residents to be responsive and use the opportunity to fill in the questionnaire online, as well as be cooperative with the interviewers, since every answer is crucial for the acquisition of high quality data.

The survey on the use of Internet has been carried out since 2004, and its results make it possible to assess the development of the information society of Latvia and evaluate the implementation of the “Europa 2020” strategy, one of the aims of which is the provision of a high-speed broadband network across the whole country.

Main results of the 2016 survey:

  • 75 % of the Latvian population had a fixed or mobile broadband Internet connection. A broadband Internet connection is used by almost 80 % of residents of Riga and the Pierīga region, while it is used by 71 % on average in the other regions of Latvia. Broadband Internet is available to 77 % of the population in cities and to 71 % in rural areas;
  • the most active Internet users were persons aged 16 to 24 – 99.6 %;
