CSB will survey doctorate holders on their career growth

01.09.2016

Starting with September of the current year, the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) and the Ministry of Education and Science will launch the Survey of Doctorate Holders within the framework of the project "Participation in International Researches on Education" funded by the European Social Fund. The aim of the survey is to acquire internationally comparable information on the careers of doctorate holders, their mobility and scientific activities.

The survey will include 1 500 persons up to the age of 69 from all over Latvia who have been selected according to the methodology created by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Doctorate holders who are included in the sample have been sent letters from the CSB inviting them to take part in the survey. Respondents will be able to fill out the questionnaire electronically on the CSB site http://e.csb.gov.lv from 2 to 15 September. The toll-free number 80000373 will be available during the electronic survey. If the questionnaire will not be filled out electronically, a CSB interviewer will survey the respective respondents via a telephone interview or face-to-face interview until 31 October.

The survey will take place within the framework of the education research programme OECD SCDH (Survey on the Careers of Doctorate Holders) of the OECD. Latvia's participation in the present, as well as other international research programmes ensures a possibility to assess the quality of education in Latvia according to common, internationally comparable criteria and facilitates the inclusion of data in a unitary system. The results of the research will also be used in the planning and assessment of policies related to the quality of education.

The results of the survey will be presented and discussed in September 2017.

The previous Survey of Doctorate Holders was carried out in 2009. It was found out during the previous survey that 75 % of all doctorate holders were carrying out research work. 42 % of employed researchers held academic positions at higher education institutions, whereas the daily work of 45 % of doctorate holders was related to the field, in which they had acquired their doctoral degree.
