19.08.2016

On Monday, August 22 Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) will start collecting data for the Farm Structure Survey 2016. The survey once in three years is conducted on all European Union Member States and European Economic Area countries, including Latvia. The first provisional results of the survey will be published in April 2017.

The survey is aimed at collecting information on land use, structure of sown and planted area, number of pigs and poultry, machinery, labour force in agriculture, gainful activities of the holding, as well as several agri-environmental indicators.

For three weeks, from 22 August to 11 September, respondents will be able to submit data electronically via the CSB Electronic Data Collection System (in Latvian only). From 26 September to 16 December interviewers of the Latvian Rural Advisory and Training Centre will visit holdings that will not provide information electronically, while CSB interviewers will take telephone interviews.

The survey unit is agricultural holding – technically and economically independent unit having common management and producing agricultural products or preserving good agricultural and environmental conditions in the soil. Holding may produce also non-agricultural products and provide non-agricultural services. Respondents provide information on all land managed thereof.

The Farm Structure Survey is a sample survey within the framework of which it has been intended to acquire information on 30 thousand agricultural holdings that have been selected with the help of simple random sampling method. The respondents included in the sample will receive CSB letter asking to take part in the survey. Respondents the e-mail address of which is known to the CSB will receive the letter electronically, while the rest of the respondents will be informed by regular mail.
