In the 3rd quarter of this year, active population of Latvia was comprised by 1.026 million people or 66.9% of country residents aged 15-74; males comprised 71.2%, while females – 63.1%. Labour Force Survey results compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia show that, in comparison with the 3rd quarter of 2012, active population has reduced by 0.9%; whereas, as compared to the 2nd quarter of 2013, it has increased by 2.3%.
In the 3rd quarter, number of employed persons constituted 906.1 thousand or 59% of the population aged 15-74 – an increase of 17.1 thousand, compared to the 2nd quarter. Increase in the number of employed persons may be observed also when comparing data with the information on the 3rd quarter of 2012, when number of employed persons in this age group accounted for 894.7 thousand or 57.4%.
Women in the total number of employed persons comprised slightly higher share than men – 50.5% and 49.5%, respectively. Only 8.7% of them did not work due to various reasons, e.g., vocation, illness, childcare leave, education or training. The number employed persons includes 5.8 thousand people, which still having the status of unemployed during the reference week were employed.

Within the framework of the Labour Force Survey, also information on wages and salaries was acquired.In comparison with the 3rd quarter of 2012, the share of employees receiving minimum monthly wage or less has reduced, while slight increase was recorded in the group of people receiving more than LVL 300 (EUR 426.86).

In the 3rd quarter of this year, the number of unemployed persons aged 15-74 comprised 120.9 thousand – 20.9 thousand persons less, as compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. Unemployment rate (share of unemployed persons in the total active population) constituted 11.8%, and during the year it has dropped by 1.9 percentage points (in 3rd quarter of 2012 - 13.7%).
In comparison with the corresponding period of the previous year, number of inactive population aged 15-74, in the 3rd quarter of 2013, has declined by 2.7% and it comprised 509.1 thousand persons.
Particular attention in this group should be given to the persons who are potential unemployed, but have been discouraged or do not know where and how to find a job. Survey results indicate that, during the reference quarter, discouraged persons accounted for 33.7 thousand or 6.6% of the inactive population.In comparison with the 3rd quarter of 2012, their number has increased by 1.6 thousand.
Within the framework of the Labour Force Survey, 4.2 thousand households were surveyed and 7.4 thousand persons aged 15-74 were interviewed.
