On consumer price changes in May 2010

Compared to April 2010, the average consumer price level in May 2010 decreased by 0.1%. Prices both of goods and services decreased by 0.1%.

Price decrease of food, furnishings, household equipments and maintenance goods, as well as price increase of goods and services related to housing had the major impact on consumer price changes in May.

The prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages on average fell by 0.2%. It was mainly affected by discounts on meat and meat products, bread and cereals, sweets, fish and fish products, milk and dairy products, tea and coffee.

Prices of furnishings, household goods, cleaning and maintenance products on average decreased by 1.2%. In particular, the most notable price drop was recorded for cleaning and maintenance products as well as household appliances, furnishing and household textiles.

The largest upward pressure came from heat energy, which prices continued to raise – in May by 3.2%. Meanwhile price drop was recorded for water supply and services of maintenance and repair of the dwelling.

Special offers and sales influenced the price decrease of articles and products for personal care, pharmaceutical goods, pet food, clothing and footwear, TV, visual and audio equipment, spare parts and accessories for personal transport equipment and telephone equipment.

There were increases in prices for tobacco products, beer, motorcars, airline tickets, financial and accommodation services, as well as package holidays.

Compared to May of the previous year, consumer prices decreased by 2.3%. The average price level for goods decreased by 1.0%, but for services - by 5.6%.

The annual average rate of change in May 2010 was -1.0%.
