On consumer price changes in July 2011

Compared to June 2011, the average consumer price level in July 2011 decreased by 0.3%. The average prices of goods fell by 0.5%, but prices of services – rose by 0.4%.

The greatest upward pressures on the price changes in July were put by goods and services related to housing, but downward – by food, clothing and footwear.

In housing group the greatest upward impact came from natural gas supply which prices on average rose by 16.9% due to the taxes and tariffs increase. Prices also rose for heat energy, rents, materials and services for dwelling repair as well as for other services relating to the dwelling.

In food commodity group the major contributors to the average price level were fresh vegetables, which prices due to the season fell by 14.2%. Price fall was recorded also for dairy products, eggs, sweets, bread and cereal products while processed meat, bakery products, tinned vegetables and fresh fruit became more expensive.

Influenced by the seasonal sales, prices of footwear fell by 8.5% and of clothing - by 6.0%. Alcoholic beverages, mobile phones, flowers, books, recreational and sports services and equipment also became cheaper.

Price increases were recorded for accommodation and sanatorium services, package holidays and passenger transport services as well as for medical goods, pet food and household appliances. Due to the tax changes tobacco products became more expensive.

Compared to July of previous year, consumer prices have increased by 4.3%, of which prices of goods have increased by 5.6%, but prices of services – by 0.8%.

The annual average rate of change in July 2011 was 3.0%.
