On consumer price changes in February 2010

Compared to January 2010 the average consumer price level in February 2010 remained unchanged. Prices of goods rose by 0.1%, but of services – decreased by 0.4%.

Price growth of goods and services in consumption groups of food, alcoholic beverages, tobacco products, transport, housing, as well as price decrease of clothing and footwear had the major impact on consumer price changes in February.

Prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages increased on average by 0.5%. Influenced by the seasonal price fluctuations, prices of vegetables rose most notably – by 8.3%. The end of special offers affected price rise of bread, eggs and confectionery. At the same time due to the discounts, price decrease was recorded for sugar, cheese, meat and meat products.

Prices of goods and services connected to transport on average grew by 0.6%, of which price rise of fuel by 1.6% had the major influence on price changes, while prices fell for cars as well as of spare parts and equipment of personal motor vehicles.

Prices of both alcoholic beverages and tobacco products increased on average by 0.6%. Most significant price rise was recorded for vines, and it was influenced by the changes of excise duty.

In housing group most important price increase was recorded for heat energy and solid fuels, 0.7% and 1.0% respectively. Meanwhile prices of housing maintenance and repair services continued to fall.

Influenced by seasonal sales, prices of clothing and footwear decreased on average by 2.2%, of which prices of clothing - by 1.8%, of footwear – by 2.6% and clothing accessories – by 6.7%.

Price growth was observed also for pharmaceutical goods, but price decrease – for insurance, telecommunication, education and catering services. Due the special offers prices fell for personal care goods, domestic appliances and video, audio, photo equipment.

Compared to February of previous year, consumer prices have decreased by 4.2% (down from 3.1% in January). The average price level for goods decreased by 3.9%, but for services - by 4.8%.

The annual average rate of change in February 2010 was 1.3% (down from 2.5% in January).
