On changes of wages and salaries in 3rd quarter of 2010

Average monthly gross wages and salaries in the country in 3rd quarter of 2010 comprised LVL 447, and it is LVL 3 or 0.8% more if compared to the 2nd quarter, according to the data of the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB).

In public sector during this period wages and salaries grew by 0.1% (from LVL 474 to 475), but in private sector – by 1.6% (from LVL 423 to 430).

Compared to the 3rd quarter of 2009, monthly average gross wages and salaries reduced by 1.9% (from LVL 456 to 447). Regardless fact that in comparison with previous year level of wages and salaries in the country still is lower, their reduction rates have diminished.

In public sector the reduction during a year comprised 4.5% (from LVL 497 to 475), of which in general government sector – 4.9% (from LVL 460 to 438), but in private sector the reduction constituted 0.1% (from LVL 431 to 430).

In comparison with the previous quarter, growth of average gross wages and salaries in selected sectors was higher than average in the country.

In electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply in 3rd quarter of this year wages and salaries increased by 15.7%, if compared to the 2nd quarter. The growth was influenced by the premiums paid for the activities of previous year. Wages and salaries in agriculture, forestry and fishing rose by 5.3%.

In sectors like professional, scientific and technical activities, information and communication, other service activities, as well as construction wages and salaries increased from 2.6% to 3.0%. In manufacturing wages and salaries grew more rapidly than average in the country - by 2.3%.

Number of employees, recalculated at full time units used to calculate monthly average wages and salaries, in the 3rd quarter of this year, if compared to the 2nd quarter, has increased by 14.7 thsd or by 2.3%, but fund of wages and salaries - by LVL 26.3 mln or by 3.1%. During the year number of employees has diminished by 30.2 thousand or by 4.5%, but fund of wages and salaries - by LVL 57.9 million or by 6.2%.

In the Baltic States the highest monthly average gross wages and salaries in the 3rd quarter of this year were recorded in Estonia – EUR 759, in Latvia and Lithuania - EUR 637 and 603, respectively. In comparison with the 3rd quarter of 2009, monthly average gross wages and salaries in Lithuania diminished by 2.8%, in Latvia - by 1.9%, but in Estonia wages and salaries slightly grew - by 0.9%.

Public sector is central and local government commercial companies, as well as companies with central or local government capital participation 50% and over, foundations, associations and funds, and their commercial companies. Data on foundations, associations and funds and their commercial activities are not included in information.

According to the European System of Accounts (ESA 95) the general government sector includes central and local government budgetary institutions, the social security fund and enterprises controlled and financed by central and local governments.
