On changes of wages and salaries in the 3rd quarter of 2008

Information compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau show that, in the 3rd quarter of 2008 average gross wages and salaries in the country comprised LVL 486 and, if compared to the second quarter it grew by 1.9%, of which in public sector 1) by 0.7%, and in private sector – by 2.7%.

Average monthly gross wages and salaries (LVL)

Compared to the corresponding period of previous year growth rate of average gross wages and salaries continues to decrease. In the first quarter of this year this indicator comprised 28.0%, in second quarter it was 23.6%, and in the third quarter it reduced to 20.3%.

Compared to the third quarter of previous year net wages and salaries in the third quarter of this year grew by 22.3% and reached on average LVL 355. Considering the consumer price growth that constituted 15.8%, the real increase of the wages and salaries comprised 5.6%.

Breakdown of gross wages and salaries by main kinds of economic activities show that, if compared to the 3rd quarter of previous year the most rapid increase was recorded in electricity, gas and water supply – by 27.3%, in education – by 26.9%, in fishery – by 24.6%, as well as in transport storage and communication sector – by 24.0%.

Among the Baltic States the highest gross wages and salaries in the 3rd quarter of this year, just like in all other quarters, were in Estonia – EUR 800. In Latvia this indicator comprised EUR 692, but the lowest gross wages and salaries were in Lithuania – EUR 672.

Compared to the 3rd quarter of 2007 in the 3rd quarter of this year Latvia witnessed the highest increase – 20.3%, Lithuania – 19.0%, and Estonia – 14.8%.

Data on Estonia, Lithuania were obtained in the statistical institutions of these countries.

In Estonia, unlike in Latvia and Lithuania, all payments of annual leave are included in month when vacation starts (not broken down by months and quarters). Therefore data comparison with previous quarter of running year is not correct and is not carried out.
