Changes in the unit values of foreign trade in the 1st quarter of 2007

Compared to corresponding quarter of 2006, the unit value (UV) in the 1st quarter of 2007 increased by 15.2% for exported goods and 6.5% for imported goods, according to the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia. Compared to the previous quarter, the UV of exported goods increased by 2.5% and the unit value of imported goods rose by 0.4%.

Compared to the 4th quarter of 2006, the average level of export unit value in the 1st quarter of 2007 was raised mostly by the UV increase of 2.3 percentage points for wood and articles of wood. The average UV level for exported goods was raised by the UV increases for miscellaneous manufactured articles (of 0.3 percentage points), for textiles and textile articles as well as for transport vehicles and transport vehicle equipment (of 0.2 percentage points). Over the same period the major lowering effect (by 0.7 percentage points) was due to a fall in the UV of mineral products.

Compared to the previous quarter, the average level of import unit value in the 1st quarter of 2007 was raised mostly by the UV increases for products of the chemical and allied industries as well as for mineral products (by 0.7 and 0.5 percentage points, respectively). The rise of the UV for transport vehicles increased the UV level by 0.4 percentage points, for vegetable products – by 0.2 percentage points. Over the same period the greatest lowering effect (by 0.8 percentage points) was due to a decrease in the UV of machinery and mechanical appliances; electrical equipment. The UV fall for base metals and articles of base metals decreased the average UV level by 0.3 percentage points, for plastics and articles thereof, as well as for miscellaneous manufactured articles – by 0.2 percentage points.
