Changes of demographic situation in Latvia in 2010

The demographic statistics data on 2010 compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau show that Latvian population continues to decrease.

At the beginning of 2011 in Latvia there were 2 million 230 thousand persons, a drop of 18.7 thousand persons compared to the previous year. Compared to 0.57% in 2009, the population decrease in 2010 comprised 0.83%.

Due to the natural movement (the number of deaths exceeding births) the number of population reduced by 10.8 thousand, but due to the long-term migration - by 7.9 thousand. In 2010 2.8 thousand persons arrived in Latvia, but 10.7 persons left for permanent residence in other countries.

Compared to the previous year, the number of marriages in 2010 diminished by 6.4% and their number per 1000 population comprised 4.1. The highest indicator during the last 18 years was in 2007 – 6.8 marriages per 1000 population. Compared to 2009 the number of divorces last year has reduced by 3.3 %.

Since 2000 the age when the first marriage is registered has grown by 2.5 years. In 2010 males concluded their first marriage at the age of 29, but females at age of 27 years. The average age of the marrying persons was 34 years for males and 31 year for females.

In Latvia the number of single persons is high. 40% of males and 31% of females aged from 25 to 49 years are not legally married.

The number of births in 2010 comprised 19.2 thousand or almost 4700 children less than in 2008 (23.9 thousand), when birth rates were the highest since 1994. Since 2008 the birth rate per 1000 population in 2010 has diminished by 18.9%.

48% of the newborn were the first children in their families (50% in 2009). The proportion of second children amongst all newborn in 2010 comprised 35%, compared to 34% a year before.

In 2010 30 thousand persons died in Latvia. Crude death rate – 13.4 deaths per 1000 population has increased by 0.8%.

A positive fact of the previous year worth to note is the decrease of the infant mortality. 110 children died during their first year of life. Compared to 2009, the number of infant deaths per 1000 live births decreased from 7.8 to 5.7 or by 26.9%.

Due to the reduction of infant death rates, the life expectancy of the population rose. According to provisional results the average life expectancy of the persons born in 2010 comprises 73.8 years, of which 68.8 years for males and 78.4 years for females, and compared to 2008 it has grown by 1.6 year for males and by 0.5 years – for females.

The data of the 1st quarter of 2011 show that the trend of the birth number reduction can be observed also this year. In the 1st quarter the number of births comprises approximately 200 children less then in the first three months of the previous year, but the number of deaths – around 100 persons less. The number of marriages is slightly growing (approximately by 100, if compared to the 1st quarter of 2010). Due to the migration the number of population in the 1st quarter has diminished by around 3.1 thousand.In the first three months of 2010 the number of population in the country decreased by 0.2%, but in the corresponding period of this year – by 0.3%.
