Building permits granted in the 1st half of 2006 for residential and civil engineering buildings

In the 1st half of 2006 construction management authorities granted 2520 permits for the construction of one-dwelling buildings with a total area of 555.9 thsd m² , according to the Central Statistical Bureau. In the 1st half of 2005 2091 permits for a total area of 441.2 thsd m2 were granted. The number of building permits granted for the construction of summerhouses and weekend houses has also increased. In the 1st half of 2006 594 building permits were granted, an increase of 25% compared to the 1st half of 2005. Building permits are granted for the construction of new buildings as well as for capital repair, reconstruction and restoration of the buildings.

Of the total number of permits issued for the construction of one-dwelling buildings, 1910 building permits or 76% were issued for the construction of new buildings. In the 1st half of 2005 the number of permits for the construction of new one-dwelling buildings represented 75% of the total number of permits granted for the construction of this kind of buildings.

The majority of building permits for the construction of one-dwelling buildings in the 1st half of 2006 were issued in the district of Riga, in total 753 building permits making up 39% of the total number of such permits in the country. 251 building permits (13%) were issued in the city of Riga, 179 (9%) in the district of Ogre, 95 (5%) in the district of Jelgava, 70 (4%) in Jūrmala, 63 (3%) in the district of Cēsis, 54 (3%) in the district of Tukums and 49 (3%) in the city of Jelgava..

Of the total number of building permits issued for the construction of summerhouses and weekend houses (594 permits), 291 or 49% were issued for the construction of new summerhouses and weekend houses with a total area of 31606 m2. The majority of this type of houses is intended to be built in the district of Riga – 169 houses or 58% of the total number of summerhouses and weekend houses followed by the city of Riga with 34 houses (12%), the district of Liepāja (21 houses or 7%) and the district of Ogre (18 houses or 6%).

In the 1st half of 2006 237 building permits were granted for the construction of two and more dwelling houses with a total area of 453.4 thsd m2 . Of the total 237 building permits issued, 201 permits for a total area of 369.2 thsd m2 were granted for the construction of new two or more dwelling buildings. These permits were granted in the cities of Riga, Daugavpils, Jelgava, Jūŗmala and Liepāja and in the districts of Bauska, Cēsis, Jelgava, Ogre, Rīga, Saldus and Talsi.

In the 1st half of 2006 building permits were granted for the construction of 36 new hotels and other similar short-term accommodation buildings with a total area of 21.4 thsd m2, 28permits were issued for the construction of new office buildings, 52 permits for new wholesale and retail trade buildings and 24 for new traffic and communications buildings. Building permits were also granted for new industrial production buildings and warehouses (71 building permits) and new mass-entertainment, educational or healthcare buildings (18 permits).

85 permits were granted for the construction of new highways, streets and roads, 3 permits for the construction of railway tracks and 56 permits for the construction of new main pipelines, communications and power transmission lines with a total length of 69.7 km. In the 1st half of 2006 395 permits were granted for the construction of new local pipelines and cables with a total length of 277 km.
