In August, industrial production output decreased by 0.6 %

04.10.2016

Data of the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) show that, compared to August 2015, in August 2016 industrial production output declined by 0.6 % (according to calendar adjusted data at constant prices). This was influenced by a production output drop in electricity and gas supply (of 15.7 %), as there was a decline in the amount of electricity produced at cogeneration plants, as well as in mining and quarrying (of 6.1 %). In turn, production output in manufacturing increased by 2.8 %.

In comparison to the corresponding period of the previous year, a significant production output increase could still be observed in manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products (of 37.6 %). An increase in production output was also recorded in manufacture of electrical equipment (of 20.0 %), in manufacture of non-metallic mineral products (of 14.6 %), as well as in the manufacturing sector having the second largest share in industrial production – manufacture of food products (of 2.5 %). Growth was also recorded in the exports of the respective sectors.

A drop in production output was recorded in manufacture of wearing apparel (of 14.9 %), in manufacture of chemicals and chemical products (of 9.5 %), in manufacture of textiles (of 3.8 %), in manufacture of fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment (of 2.0 %), as well as in the manufacturing sector having the largest share in industrial production – manufacture of wood and of products of wood (of 0.8 %).

Compared to July 2016, in August 2016 industrial production output declined by 2.0 % (according to seasonally adjusted data at constant prices). This was influenced by a drop in manufacturing (of 1.7 %) and in electricity and gas supply (of 7.8 %), however, there was an output increase recorded in mining and quarrying (of 4.5 %).

Methodological explanations

The industrial production volume index describes changes in the volume of industrial production during the reference period in comparison to the base period. The index is estimated by recalculating the production output indicator at constant prices with the help of producer price indices.

The industrial turnover index measures the monthly development of market demand for industrial goods and services. It is calculated at current prices without excluding price influence.  Unlike industrial goods that also include unfinished goods and goods in stock, turnover only includes the goods sold and industrial services provided.
