Aija Žīgure, President of the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB), gave a speech during the opening of the 48th session of the United Nations (UN) Statistical Commission on 7 March in New York, at the General Assembly Hall. A. Žīgure received an invitation to address the members of the UN Statistical Commission in honour of its 70th anniversary as one of the few long-standing managers of national statistical institutes.

During her speech, Aija Žīgure underlined the significance of the occasion: “It gives me great pleasure to address all of you at today’s event commemorating the 70th anniversary of the United Nations Statistical Commission. My working life has been related to the development of the field of statistics, and the opportunity to be on this podium is a tremendous honour.”

While addressing those present, Žīgure underlined the crucial role of the UN Statistical Commission in the development of national statistical institutes, and indicated that: “Data and information represents great value in the everyday life of our society. During modern times, the role of statistics is of utmost importance in increasing the respective value, as we regularly come across such economic and social phenomena as globalisation, social inequality, poverty, climate change, demographic shifts and many others.”

Žīgure drew attention to the scope of work of the UN, which is more extensive than that of other international organisations, and she underlined the following: “UN high-level experts have provided significant professional support in the development of the statistical system of Latvia, and our specialists have learned a lot from them. The help they provided was priceless, as knowledge is undeniably the greatest treasure of all.”

The 48th session of the UN Statistical Commission is taking place in New York from 7 to 10 March, during which Latvia is represented by Aija Žīgure, President of the CSB, and Ieva Zemeskalna, Head of the EU Affairs Coordination Division.
