In the activity of hotels the number of visitors continues to increase

According to the data of Central Statistical Bureau, the number of visitors in hotels and other accommodation establishments1 in the 3rd quarter of this year comprised 686.7 thousand people, which is 16.1% more than in the same period of the last year. Of which 68.8% were foreign tourists and 31.2% – residents of Latvia. Similar breakdown of visitors was also in the previous quarters. Increase in the number of foreign visitors comprised 18.1%, but in the number of Latvian travellers – 11.9% if compared to the 3rd quarter of the previous year.

The highest share of the foreign tourists stayed in Riga – 72.3%, in Jūrmala – 10.3% and in Ventspils – 3.1%. The highest share of the Latvian travellers stayed in Riga – 18.6%, Ventspils – 7.5%, Liepāja – 7.3% and Jūrmala – 4.0%.

Compared to the previous quarters, of all cities under state jurisdiction the largest increase in the number of visitors in the 3rd quarter was in Ventspils, thus common structure of visitor welcoming cities was changed.

In the 3rd quarter of 2013 the total number of overnight stays comprised 1 mln 365.2 thsd, which is 7.5% more than in the 3rd quarter of 2012. Average length of stay of foreign visitors in the 3rd quarter comprised 2.1 night.

At the end of the 3rd quarter 15.3 thsd rooms and 34.8 thsd beds were available in the accommodation establishments. Number of rooms and beds not available in low season is not included in the total number.

Total room occupancy in Latvia in the 3rd quarter varied between 47% to 63%. The highest room occupancy was in July both in Latvia in general – 63.5%, and in Riga – 72.7%. Analyzing occupancy rate by stars granted to hotels, the highest room occupancy in the 3rd quarter was in Riga’s four-star hotels with 86.6% in July.

As compared to the 3rd quarter of the previous year, the number of tourists from neighbouring countries has increased: from Belorussia – by 43.6%, from Russia – by 41.3%, from Estonia – by 22.2% and from Lithuania – by 12.2%. Also significant increase in this quarter was observed in the number of visitors from Spain – by 40.1% and from Sweden – by 26.6%.  From countries mentioned and depicted below for the longest period of time in Latvian accommodation establishments stayed visitors from Belarus (2.6 nights), Russia (2.5 nights) and Norway (2.3 nights).
