On activities of combined heat and power plants in 2011

According to the data of the Central Statistical Bureau in 2011 there were 84 active combined heat and power (CHP) plants in Latvia, with total electrical capacity of 966.2 megawatts (MW). These CHP plants produced 3122 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity and 4175 GWh of heat energy, which is 60.9 % of the total volume of the produced heat.

Cogeneration is simultaneous production of heat energy and electricity in a single cycle.

As compared to 2010, electrical power of cogeneration plants has increased by 1.95%. CHP plants in Riga had the highest installed electrical capacity – 880.1 MW.

There are two types of CHP plants:
  • public CHP plants the primary activity of which is generation of heat energy and electricity (division 35 of NACE Rev.2.);
  • autoproducer CHP plants, which generate heat and electricity for their own production and technological use and partly for sale (NACE Rev.2., except division 35 of NACE Rev.2).
Out of 84 CHP plants active in 2011, 64 were public cogeneration plants with installed electrical capacity of 944.8 MW, which is 97.8 % of the total installed capacity of CHP plants, and 20 were autoproducer CHP plants with the installed electrical capacity of 21.4 MW.

In 2011 for the production of heat energy and electricity CHP plants used mainly natural gas (92.3%), as well as biogas, fuelwood, coal, residual (heavy) fuel oils and bio-diesel oil.

Out of 84 CHP plant active in 2011, 64 plants (both public and autoproducer) with the total electric capacity of 883 MW were active more than 6 months.

In June 2012 in the annual data section of the CSB data base (www.csb.gov.lv) under subject Energy several tables on the activities of CHP plants in 2011 will be published:

  • Number of CHP plants, electrical capacity, heat energy and electricity produced (EN18);
  • CHP plants by fuel type (EN20);
  • Heat balance in statistical regions and cities under state jurisdiction (EN23);
  • Heat produced in autoproducer heat plants and CHP plants by kind of economic activity (EN24);
  • Fuel consumed by autoproducer heat plants and CHP plants in breakdown by kind of economic activity (EN25);
