28.08.2013

Data of the survey on apple tree plantations in 2012 on the number of apple trees, plantation areas, age[1] and density[2] thereof in commercial gardens, i.e., in areas yield from which is entirely or mainly intended for sale, compiled by Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia show that, in 2012, total area of apple trees in commercial gardens accounted for 2.4 thousand hectares – 85% more than in 2007, when previous survey was conducted – and this area was occupied by more than 1.3 million apple trees (in 2007 – 736.7 thousand).

45% of the apple tree plantations and 71% of the total apple tree number were planted during the last 15 years, of which 7% of areas and 133.8 thousand apple trees (10% of total) were planted during the last 5 years, while 47% of plantations and 22% of the total apple tree number have more than 25 years.

On average one commercial garden hectare is occupied by 558 apple trees, nevertheless plantation density differs among the plantation periods. In gardens planted 5-14 years ago on average on one hectare there are 894 apple trees, while in gardens older than 25 years – only 262.
