In 2015 for the first time in the history of Latvia the harvested production of grain reached 3 mln tons

18.02.2016

In 2015 harvested production of grain reached 3.0 mln tons which is 794.3 thsd tons or 35.7 % more than in 2014. Thus according to the preliminary data of the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia (CSB), the record of the previous year is exceeded and the largest harvested production of grain in the history of Latvia is reached.

The significant growth in the harvested production of grain was affected not only by increase in the cereal croppland  (by 17.2 thsd ha or 2.6 % more than in 2014), but also by a significant growth of the average yield per ha.

Sown area, harvested production and average yield of cereals

During last four years the average yield of cereals is above 30 quintals per hectare.

As a result of an improved technological process of crop growing process, selection of  highly productive and more qualitative sort of seed and very favourable climatic conditions, the average yield of cereals increased from 34.0 quintals in 2014 to 44.9 quintals in 2015, that is the highest yield in the history of Latvia. In 2008 for the first time yield of cereals exceeded 30 quintals per hectare, but only in last four years it is above 30 quintals.

The growth of average yield of cereals was observed in all regions of Latvia. In Zemgale, where sown area of cereals formed 30 % of total sown area of cereals in the country, the average yield of cereals reached 52.9 quintals per hectare and 35.3 % of the total harvested production in Latvia were obtained. In Kurzeme the average yield of cereals reached 44.7 quintals, in Vidzeme – 39.5 quintals, in Latgale – 37.0 quintals.

In holdings with sown area of cereals exceeding 150 hectares (60 % of sown area of cereals in the country) the average yield reached 51.8 quintals, and from this area was obtained 70 % of the total harvested grain.

The growth of the total harvested production of grain was significantly affected by the high average yield of winter wheat per hectare – 55.3 quintals which is 23.3 quintals or 72.8 % more than in 2014. In 2015 winter wheat occupied 43.2 % of the total sown area of cereals, but their share in the total harvested production of grain reached 53.1 %.

In large holdings with sown area of winter wheat exceeding 300 hectares, which constituted 3 % of  total sown area of winter wheat, the average yield reached 62.7 quintals per hectare and there were obtained 48.0 % of the total harvested production of winter wheat.

The highest average yield of winter wheat was in Zemgale – 60.5 quintals, and also in Latgale, where yields of cereals are usually lower, it reached 47.6 quintals per hectare.

Purchase and exports of grain increased by one third

The purchase of grain grown in Latvia significantly increased – in 2015 it was 2564.8 thsd tons (by 617.5 thsd tons or 31.7 % more than in 2014), that is the greatest purchase of grain in the history of Latvia. In turn, the average purchase price of grain in 2015 was the lowest in the last five years ( EUR 143.43 per ton).

Wheat accounted for 80.5 % of the total amount of purchased grain (in 2014 – 77.6 %). Its purchase increased by 552.3 thsd tons or 36.6 %, of which food wheat – by 314.9 thsd tons or 32.1 %. The purchase of rye also increased – by 59.0 thsd tons or 58.7 %, of which food rye – by 37.8 thsd tons or 45.7 %.

As compared to 2014, volume of grain export also significantly increased. In 2015, 1792 thsd tons of wheat and meslin were exported which is  416 thsd tons or 30.2 % more than in 2014. Exports of rye grew by 45 thsd tons or 68.8 % as compared to the previous year. Like in 2014, also in 2015 export volume may include grain from the yield of the previous year.

The sown area of rape substantially decreased

In 2015 as compared to the previous year the sown area of rape decreased by 11.1 thsd hectares or 11.1 %.  The average yield of rape grew from 18.5 quintals in 2014 to 32,9 quintals in 2015, in turn, the total rape’s seed yield grew by 107.2 thsd tons or 57.8 %. It was affected by the growth of winter rape’s that occupies 77 % of the total sown area of rape, average seeds yield  from 19.0 quintals in 2014 to 36.5 quintals in 2015. Exports of rape and turnip rape seeds increased by 66.thsd tons or 39.5 % as compared to the previous year.

In 2015 the total sown area of pulses increased by 2.7 times, of which sown area of field beans – by 17.5 thsd hectares or 3.1 times. It was promoted by the introduction of a new supporting payment for agricultural practice favourable to climate and environment or greening.

The sown area and harvested production of potatoes decreased by 7.3 % and 1.6 %, respectively, but its average yield per hectare increased by 6.1 %.

Last year 194.9 thsd tons of vegetables (including vegetables  in greenhouses) were grown which is  3.5 thsd tons or 1.9 % more than in 2014. Open field vegetable areas decreased by 1.8 %, however, with an increase of the average yield from 217 quintals in 2014 to 225 guintals in 2015, the volume of harvested vegetables grew by 3.2 thsd tons or 1.8 %.
