In 2013 accommodation sector showed stable increase

According to the data of the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB), in 2013 the number of visitors in hotels and other accommodation establishments1 comprised 1.8 mln people who spent there 3.8 mln nights. Compared to 2012, the number of persons served rose by 11.8%, but the number of overnight stays - by 6.4%. Evaluating in the period of last ten years, the number of foreign visitors and overnight stays last year doubled, which shows benefit from such marketing activities in tourism sector as LIVE Riga, advertisement activities abroad, participation in tourism fairs, etc.

Compared to 2012, the number of foreign visitors has increased by 14%. The largest increase was observed in the number of visitors from our neighbours Belarus – 36.5% and Russia – 33.4%, as well as Estonia – 21.3% and Lithuania – 17%. Also the number of visitors from Spain rose – by 20.6%, the Netherlands – 16.7%, Sweden – 8.4% and the Great Britain – 5.4%. The decrease was observed in the number of visitors from Scandinavian countries: Finland – 14.4%, Denmark – 7.6% and Norway – 2.2%.

The number of Latvian travellers who stayed in hotels and other accommodation establishments in 2013 rose by 7.5%. The highest share of the Latvian travellers stayed in Rīga – 24%, Liepāja – 8.4% and Jūrmala – 6.6%.

The highest room occupancy was in July both in Latvia in general – 62.9%, and in Rīga – 72.7%. The highest occupancy rate – 86.6% – in four-star hotels in Riga was reached in July.

In the 4th quarter of last year there were 380.1 thsd visitors in hotels and other accommodation establishments which is 11.1% more than in the 4th quarter of 2012. Of which 66.1% were foreign tourists and 33.9% – residents of Latvia. Similar breakdown of visitors was also in the previous quarters. Increase in the number of foreign visitors comprised 12.8%, but in the number of Latvian travellers – 8% if compared to the same period a year ago.

The highest share of the foreign tourists stayed in Rīga – 83.2%, in Jūrmala – 7.7% and in Liepāja – 1.2%. The highest share of the Latvian travellers stayed in Rīga – 28%, Jūrmala – 9.1% and Liepāja – 9%.

The total number of overnight stays comprised 767.3 thsd, which is 1.5% more than in the 4th quarter of 2012. The number of overnight stays of foreign visitors has increased by 4.9%, compared to the same period of 2012. Average length of stay of foreign visitors comprised 2.1 nights.

At the end of the 4th quarter 14.5 thsd rooms and 32.3 thsd beds were available in the accommodation establishments. Number of rooms and beds not available in low season is not included in the total number.

Total room occupancy in Latvia in the 4th quarter varied between 33% to 42%. The highest room occupancy was in October both in Latvia in general – 41.7%, and in Rīga – 52.7%. Analysing the occupancy rate by stars, the highest occupancy rate was recorded in five-star hotels in Rīga, reaching 60.9% in November, and in four-star hotels, reaching 60.8% in October.

As compared to the 4th quarter of the previous year, the number of tourists from neighbouring countries has increased: from Estonia – by 28.3%, from Russia – by 27.2%, from Belarus – by 16.4% and from Lithuania – by 14%. From countries mentioned and depicted below for the longest period of time in Latvian accommodation establishments stayed visitors from Belarus (3.5 nights), Norway (2.3 nights) and the Great Britain (2.2 nights).
