In the 1st quarter total volume of freights carried increased by 2.7%

According to the data on freight transport compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB), in the 1st quarter of 2015 the total volume of freights carried in main transport sectors has grown by 2.7% as compared to the 1st quarter of 2014.

In the 1st quarter of 2015, 16.4 mln tons of the freight was carried by train, which is a decrease of 3.9% compared to the 1st quarter of 2014.Of which national freights by rail comprised 0.3 mln tons – 0.6% less than in the corresponding period of 2014. In international traffic the volume of freights carried by rail reduced by 0.7 mln tons or 3.9%. Import freight traffic dropped by 2.8%, but export freight traffic – by 44.9%. Freight traffic in transit through Latvia increased by 64.2%. Freight traffic by rail to/from Latvian ports fell by 2.1%, comprising 85.2% of international traffic.

In the 1st quarter of 2015, 12.5 mln tons of the freight was carried by road, which is a rise of 1.4 mln tons (12.9%) compared to the 1st quarter of 2014. Growth in the volume of freight was mostly determined by the increase in transportation of food products and beverages, as well as by transportation of mining and quarrying products by 65.3% and 35.9%, respectively.

The bulk (73.2%) of the total freight volumes by road was national freight, where the indicator increased by 0.7 mln tons or 7.8%. International freight traffic rose by 0.7 million tons (29.4%).

23.1% of the total volume of freights carried by road were comprised by products of agriculture, hunting and forestry, fish and other fishing products, 20% - by metal ores and other mining and quarrying products and peat, but 15.5% –  by wood and products of wood and cork (except furniture), paper and paper products.

In the 1st quarter of 2015 by the oil products pipeline 1.8 mln tons of oil products were transported, rise of 2.3% on the 1st quarter of 2014.
