In the 1st quarter of 2007 the Internet was available to 51% of households

The results of survey* on the use of information and communication technologies in households show that in the 1st quarter of 2007 Internet was available to every second household (51%), according to Central Statistical Bureau. However, 61% of all Latvian residents have used computer at least once a lifetime.<0

In order to get to the Internet, in households personal computers were used the most (38%), which is more by 10 percentage points than in the first 3 months of 2006. 30% of all households used mobile phone, in order to get to the Internet, which is more by 2 percentage points compared to first 3 months of 2006. 6% of all households used portable computers, in order to get to the Internet (increase by 2 percentage points).

In the survey households were also asked about the usage of computer. The results of the survey show that the usage of computer and Internet is proportionally reversed by the age of persons. In the age group of 16-24 years 94% have used the computer during the last 3 months, in the age group of 25-54 years- 65%, but in the group of age 55-74 years- only 18% of all residents. But the Internet in the last 3 months have used 94% of persons in the age group of 16-24 years, in the age group of 25-54 years- 62%, but in the age group of 55-74 years- only 16% of all residents.

43% of all residents used computer at home, which is more by 12 percentage points than in the 1st quarter of 2006. 22% of all Latvian residents used Internet at the work place. 10% of residents used Internet in educational institutions, however, in the age group of 16 to 24 years, i.e., in the group which includes pupils and students, this indicator was significantly higher- 50%.

In January- March 2007 almost all Internet users (94%) used it to search for an information and for directLink services. 89% of all users used the possibility to contact (to send e-mails, chat, etc.) on the Internet. Every second (50%) user of the web used the Internet bank. Meanwhile, one third (33%) of the web users used the Internet to check the work and offered possibilities of the state and self-governments. Approximately the same number (34%) tried to look up for an information on the education and studies possibilities.

15% of all residents or 25% of the Internet users at least once have purchased or ordered goods or services for own needs.

Purchases on the Internet are mostly done by its users in the age group of 25- 34 years (32%), and mostly that are men (26%).
