In the 1st half total volume of freights carried has remained at the level of previous year; number of passengers carried has grown

According to the information on freight transport compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau, in the 1st half of 2013 the total volume of freights carried in main transport sectors has remained at the level of previous year (decrease of 0.3%) as compared to the 1st half of 2012.

In the 1st half of 2013 29.4 mln tons of the freight was carried by rail, which is a decrease of 12.7% compared to January – June of the previous year.

National freights by rail comprised 0.4 mln tons - 40.2 thsd tons (8.4%) less than at the corresponding period of 2012. In international transportation the volume of freights carried by rail reduced by 4.2 million tons or 12.8%. Freight transport through the Latvia’s ports, which comprised 81.9% of international freight haulage diminished by 13.2%.

In the first half of 2013 27.2 mln tons of the freight was carried by road, which is an increase of 3.4 mln tons or 14.3% compared to the first half of the previous year. Growth in the volume of freights was mostly determined by rise of 20.6% in the transportation of gravel, crushed stone and sand and increase of 10.4% in transportation of products of agriculture and forestry.

The bulk (80.5%) of the total volume of freights by roads were national freights, where the indicator increased by 3.1 million tons (16.3%). Also international freight transportation rose by 0.3 million tons (6.7%).

One third (33%) of the total volume of freights carried by road were comprised by metal ores and other mining and quarrying products and peat, but 19.6% - by products of agriculture, hunting and forestry, fish and other fishing products.

In the 1st half of 2013 3.6 mln tons of oil products were transported by the oil products pipeline, rise of 25.3% on the same period of 2012.

Passenger transportation by public transportin the 1st half of 2013 grew by 3.2% as compared to the 1st half of the previous year.

The mostly widely used type of public transport is regular bus traffic. More than a half of public transport passengers used this transport mode. In the 1st half of 2013 74.1 mln passengers were carried by regular bus traffic lines, which is an increase of 2.2% compared to January-June of the previous year. The majority (99.7%) of these passengers were carried by national bus traffic. The number of passengers carried by national transport rose by 2.1%, of which in urban routes – by 4.1%, in regional local routes and regional interurban routes – by 3.8% and 4.1%, respectively. In the international transportation the number of passengers grew by 18.8%.

Reduction in the number of passengers carried by rail in the 1st half of 2013 comprised 0.3%. 98.2% of all passengers carried by rail were carried by national transport. The number of passengers carried by national transport by rail decreased by 0.4%, but in international transport (mainly between Latvia and Russia) - it increased by 6.2%.

In the 1st half of 2013 45.6 mln passengers were carried by urban electrified transport, which is an increase of 5.7% compared to the 1st half of the previous year. The number of passengers carried by trolleybus grew by 4.4%, but by tram – by 7.2%.
