Hotels and recreational establishments in the 1st quarter of 2008

In comparison with 1st quarter of 2008, number of visitors in hotels and other collective accommodation establishments¹ in the 1st quarter of 2009 decreased by 27% and comprised 191.6 thsd people, according to Central Statistical Bureau. Of all visitors 39% were Latvian residents and 61% - foreign visitors. The highest share of the Latvian residents stayed in Riga – 31%, Liepaja – 10% and Riga district – 8%. The highest share of the foreign tourists stayed in Riga – 84% and Jurmala – 6%.

At the end of 1st quarter 14.4 thsd rooms were available in accommodation establishments which is more by 15% than in the 1st quarter of 2008 and 31.7 thsd beds were available which is more by 13% than in the same period of previous year.

Compared to the same period of 2008, in the 1st quarter of 2009, hotel room and bed occupancy rate² in Latvia and Riga has decreased.

¹ Every month Central Statistical Bureau carries out survey on hotels and other collective accommodation establishments which compiles information on Latvian collective accommodation establishments, excluding State specialized sanatoriums and convalescent homes, which provide health care services for State. The survey includes hotels with at least 10 rooms and other collective accommodation establishments with at least 5 rooms.

² Bed and room occupancy rates are monthly indicators.
