Development of demographic processes in Latvia in the 1st half of 2009

26.08.2009

According to Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) data, both the number of births and the number of deaths is decreasing this year. Also the number of population continues to reduce. The decrease rate has slowed down during the recent years: in 2007 the number of population in Latvia has dropped by 0.46%, in 2008 – by 0.42%. In July 1st this year 2 million 255 thousand residents lived in Latvia, which is less by 5.8 thousand persons or by 0.3 % than in the beginning of this year, according to the calculation of the CSB. The number of population due to natural movement (the number of deaths exceeding births) resulted in a population decrease of 4.2 thousand; excess of emigration over immigration resulted in a population drop of 1.6 thousand persons.

Since 2002 the tendency of marriage number increase was observed in Latvia. In 2007, 15,486 marriages were registered which is the largest number since 1993. In 2008 the number of marriages dropped by 16.4%. In the 1st half-year of 2009, 3,528 marriages were registered which is less by 1,066 marriages than in the first six months of 2008. The number of marriages in the first six months of this year, compared to the first half-year of 2008, reduced by 23%.

Already for several years small birth increase tendency is observed in Latvia. In 2008 the highest birth rate was observed in the country since 1994 – 23,948 children were born. In the 1st half-year of this year the number of births was 11,140 which is less by 1,007 children or by 8.3 %, compared to the same period of last year.

During the past years the number of women in fertile age (15-49 years) has become stable. If since 2000 the total number of women has decreased by 5.2 %, the number of women aged 15 - 49 has decreased significantly less – only by 3.0 %. The highest birth indicators are for women aged 20 – 29 years. The rate of women in this age group over the total of women in fertile age has increased from 27.2 % in 2000 to 30.1 % in the beginning of 2009.

Number of marriages and births in 2008 and
in 1st half-year of 2009 by months

If the number of marriages and births of previous year are compared to the number of this year by months, it is obvious that trends, even though in a slightly lower level, still are very similar.

Population mortality has decreased in 2008 – there was 31 thsd deaths or less by 2 thsd compared to 2007. In the six months of this year the number of deaths continued to reduce and comprised 15.4 thousand (less by 449 persons or by 2.8 % in the corresponding period of last year).

Statistics of international migration of population developed by the CSB, using data of the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs, witness that in 2009 population emigration from the country is continuing. In the first half-year almost three thsd persons departed from Latvia to other countries with an aim to settle there for permanent life or for at least one year which is almost the same as in the first half-year of 2008.

On July 1st this year 710.6 thsd persons lived in Riga – less by 2.4 thsd persons or 0.3% compared to the beginning of the year. The number of population due to natural movement (the number of deaths exceeding births) resulted in a population decrease of 0.9 thousand; excess of emigration over immigration resulted in a population drop of 1.5 thousand persons.
