On changes of wages in 2007 and in the 4th quarter of 2007

The data of Central Statistical Bureau show that average gross monthly wage and salary in the country in2007, compared to 2006,has increased from 302 lats to 398 lats or by 31.5%. Wages and salaries in the public sector1) increased by 35.8% (from 351 to 477 lats), but in private sector – by 30.4% (from 277 to 362 lats).

Countries average net monthly wage in this period increased by 32.0% and reached 286 lats.

Average gross monthly wage and salary in this period most rapidly has increased in the following sectors: fishing, fishery and related services – from 189 to 284 lats or by 50.4%, public, social and other services- from 259 to 359 lats or by 38.8%, health and social work - from 298 to 408 lats or by 37.1%, public administration and defence; compulsory social security - from 429 to 587 lats or by 36.7% and agriculture, hunting and forestry – from 255 to 349 lats or, accordingly, by 36.7%.

Compared to the 4th quarter of 2006, in the 4th quarter of 2007 the wage and salary has increased by 29.8%. Average gross monthly wage and salary in the public sector1) has increased from 419 to 564 lats or by 34.8%, but in private sector - from 306 to 392 lats or by 28.1%. The average monthly gross wage and salary in commercial companies of private sector with 50 and more employees was 496 lats, but in enterprises with 50 and less employees - 298 lats which is 60% of monthly gross wage and salary in large enterprises in the 4th quarter of 2007.

The largest average gross monthly wages and salaries in the 4th quarter of 2007 in the Baltic States were in Estonia – 784 euros (increase over the 4th quarter of previous year – 20.2%), in Latvia – 635 euros (29.8%) and Lithuania – 594 euros (18.5%).
