Building permits granted for residential and civil engineering buildings in Latvia in 2008

Compared to 2007 the number of building permits granted for the construction of residential and non-residential buildings, as well as for capital repairs, reconstruction and restoration of such buildings in 2008 has decreased significantly, according to the data of the Central Statistical Bureau.

In 2008 construction management authorities granted 3550 building permits for the construction of single dwelling buildings, and it is 34% less than in 2007.

Of the total number of building permits granted for the construction of single dwelling buildings 69% were granted for the construction of new houses. In 2007 the number of building permits granted for such type of buildings comprised 75% of the total number of building permits granted.

The majority of building permits for the construction of single dwelling buildings in 2008 were issued in the district of Riga, in total 718 building permit making up 29% of the total number of such permits in the country. 294 building permits were issued in the district of Ogre (12%), in Riga – 195 (8%), and in district of Tukums – 110 (4%).

The number of building permits granted for the construction of summerhouses and weekend houses has decreased. In 2008 957 building permits were granted, and it is 11% less than in 2007.

Of the total number of building permits issued for the construction of summerhouses and weekend houses 543 permits or 57% were granted for the construction of new summerhouses and weekend houses with a total area of 59.3 thsd m2. Majority of the construction of such houses has been planned in Riga district – 265 houses or 49% of the total number of summerhouses and weekend houses, and in Jūrmala – 86 (16%).

In 2008 199 building permits were granted for the construction of two or more dwelling buildings with total area of 389.3 thsd m2, of which 111 building permit was issued for new construction of two or more dwelling buildings with total area of 295.7 thsd m2. Most of those permits were issued in the district of Riga – 53, in Riga – 33, and in Jūrmala – 8.

In 2008 building permits were granted for the construction of 50 new hotels and other similar short-term accommodation buildings with a total area of 49.2 thsd m2, 71permit was issued for the construction of new office buildings, 71 permit for new wholesale and retail trade buildings and 38 for new traffic and communications buildings. Building permits were also granted for new industrial production buildings and warehouses (182 building permits) and new mass-entertainment, educational or healthcare buildings (66 permits).

Building permits were granted also for the civil engineering constructions. 191 building permit was granted for the construction of new highways, streets and roads, 2 building permits – for the construction of railway tracks, as well as, 204 permits for the construction of new main pipelines, communications and power transmission lines with a total length of 284 km. In 2008 860 building permits were granted for the construction of new local pipelines and cables with a total length of 500.6 km.
